FEBRUARY 29, 2020 - COVINGTON
It was yet another excellent day for Covington wrestling as eight Buccaneer wrestlers punched their tickets to next week’s district meet by finishing in the top four of their respective weight classes on Saturday.
Four Buccaneers placed fifth to earn alternate status and could have an opportunity to compete at the district meet if a wrestler ahead of them can’t compete due to illness, failing skin check or failing to make weight.
Covington also finished third in the team standings with 164 points behind champion Brookville (203.5) and runner-up Troy Christian (174.5).
Leading the way for Covington was junior 126 pounder Kellan Anderson, who captured the lone championship for the Buccs. Anderson picked up a pin in 45 second over Timmy Davis of Brookville to advance to the finals, where he pinned Duke McCombs of Southeastern in 3:21 of the championship match.
Cale Vanderhorst advanced to the finals at 120 pounds with an 8-0 major decision victory over Troy Kennedy of Troy Christian, but fell to Miami East’s Max Shore in the final seconds by the slimmest of margins, 3-2.
Buccaneer 138 pounder Connor Sindelir punched his ticket to the championship match with a 12-0 major decision win over Brockville’s Brennon Moore. He then dropped his championship bout to Troy Christians’ Austin Awan by the score of 12-5.
The final Buccaneer wrestler to reach the championship match was junior 170 pounder Trentin Alexander. He opened the tournament with a 1:11 pin of Chriss Farr of Tri-County North and then captured a 9-5 come-from-behind win over Lane Medford of Indian Lake. Alexander was then pinned by #1 seed Devin Oligee in the championship match.
Finishing fourth to advance to districts was Jensen Wagoner (160), Bryce Smith (182), Dylan Staudt (220) and Scott Blumenstock (285).
Wagoner won his go-to-district match 9-3 over Brookville’s Dylan Starnes, while Smith pinned Springfield Shawnee’s Cameron Ervin in 4:02. Study pinned Jayden Skeebbvy of Miami East in 2:12 and Blumenstock earned his trip to district with a forfeit victory over Cael Rose of Miami East, who couldn’t compete due to an injury suffered in his previous match.
The four alternates for Covington are Dalton Bishop (106), Brian Morrison (113), David Robinson (152) and Deacon Shields (152). Bishop defeated Carson Sievers of National Trail by a 10-0 major decision and Morrison earned a bye. Robinson pinned Northeastern’s Dylan Sebastian in 2:02 and Shields pinned Greenview’s Caleb Allen in 2:02.
Senior 195 pounder Jesse Fisher saw his season and career end. Fisher wrestled well in what was one of the toughest weight classes at the sectional and represented the wrestling program with class and leadership throughout his entire career.
The district tournament is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm on Friday at Troy’s Hobart Arena.
