Despite missing six starters at the event, Covington’s high school wrestling team came away with a second place finish at the 16-team Dayton Christian Invitational on Saturday. Batavia won the tournament, while Greeneview placed third.
The Buccs finished with three individual champions, and six place winners overall.
Carson Taylor won the 106 lb. weight class with a 5-0 record with 5 pins. Michael Hagan (120) also placed first, earning a 4-0 record and 4 pins. Connor Sindelir (165) joined the others atop the podium with a 4-0 record with 3 pins.
Taking runner-up for the Buccs were Scott Blumenstock (285) and Izaiah Sherman (190). Blumenstock finished 3-1 on the day, with 3 pins, while Sherman went 4-1 with 2 pins.
Caleb Miller finished in 4th place with a 3-1 record with 3 pins. Also winning matches for the Buccs were Brian Morrison (126), Luke Brown (150, pin) and Hayden Barker (220, pin).
Covington travels to the Bellefontaine Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 11.
Milton-Union Jr. High Invitational

Covington’s Jr. High wrestling team finished in 6th place out of 16 teams at the Milton-Union Jr. Bulldog Invitational on Saturday. The Buccs advanced four wrestlers to the finals, and finished with five top-four individual place-winners.
Caleb Ryman brought home the championship at 116 lbs. with an exciting 4-3 victory over Northmont’s Landon McCargish. Ryman finished with a 4-0 record with a pin, technical fall and a major decision.
Jonathan Miller (80 lbs), Henry Skaggs (92) and Zane Lemp (205) all finished in second place. Miller dropped his final bout to Urbana’s Libertie Nigh, and finished with a 2-1 record with 2 pins. Skaggs fell to Vandalia’s Jordan Chewning, finishing with a 3-1 record overall with 3 pins. Lemp dropped a close 7-4 decision to Sidney’s Stylez Smith, and finished the day with a 3-1 record and 2 pins.
Mason Epperson was Covington’s fifth place-winner, taking 4th place at 160 lbs., with a 2-1 record and a pin. Elijah Carnes (128) finished with a 3-1 record with 2 pins, while Landon Beeman (110) finished 2-2, with 1 pin. Also competing well for the Buccs were Zaq Steele (104), Trent Reynolds (116, pin), Victor Michaels (142), Aiden Collins (172) and Trentin Havenar (205, pin).
