JANUARY 8, 2020 - COVINGTON
Bad luck with illness and injuries has plagued the Covington wrestling team this season, but somehow the Buccaneers have managed to overcome their misfortunes with impressive showings in each outing.

And Saturday at the Troy Invitational the Buccaneers put together yet another impressive showing despite a few quality wrestlers being out of the lineup.

In all, Covington crowned three individual tournament champions and won the team title by compiling 241 team points in a field consisting of 15 teams.

Winning individual championships for Covington were sophomore Michael Hagan at 120 pounds, freshman Izaiah Sherman at 175 pounds and senior Jensen Wagoner at 190 pounds. Sherman’s performance was extremely impressive as he pinned returning district placer and top seed Mason Vonderwell of Delphos St. John’s in the finals.

Izaiah Sherman locks up a pin on his way to a championship at 175 pounds.

Sophomores Carson Taylor (106 pounds) and Jericho Quinter (113 pounds) reached the finals as well and finished runner-up in loaded weight classes. Taylor dropped a decision to Corbin Kimmel of Wayne Trace in the finals, while Quinter was forced to injury default to returning state runner-up Cooper Shore of Miami East in his finals match.

Senior Scott Blumenstock had a great day at heavyweight as he placed third in yet another tough weight class, while fellow senior Caleb Miller finished third at 150 pounds with an impressive 8-2 win over Kendal Plikerd of Ben Logan in the consolation final.

Connor Sindelir placed fourth at 157 pounds for the Buccs, while sophomore Hayden Barker placed fifth at 215 pounds and junior Brian Morrison took sixth at 126 pounds.

Several other Buccaneer wrestlers competed very well and earned valuable team points to contribute to the team championship. Those wrestlers were Kaden Thompson (132 pounds), Jackson Shiverdecker (138 pounds), Aveyen Meek (144 pounds), Allen Garman (165 pounds), Ashtin Gardner (215 pounds) and Zeb Woodward-Roeth (215 pounds).

The Buccaneers have a week to gain health before talking part in the inaugural Three Rivers Conference Championships next Saturday.

Michael Hagan won the 120 pound weight class.
