1999-00 COVINGTON BUCCANEERS
The 1999-2000 Covington Buccaneers started off a new decade and a new century in grand fashion under the direction of head coach Tom Barbee and assistant coach Eric Vanderhorst.
What made the year special was the fact that two wrestlers competed on the biggest stage of highs school, wrestling – the state wrestling meet. Those two grapplers were Steve Batdorf (152 pounds) and Brandon Owens (171 pounds). The trip to state was the second in a row for Owens, who is the tenth Buccaneer wrestler in program history to qualify for state twice.
As a team, the Buccs finished runner-up in the league (CCC) and qualified nine wrestlers to the District Tournament. Covington recorded a 10-5-1 record in dual meets, a 68-23-1 record in tournaments and an overall record of 78-28-1 for a winning percentage of 74%.
