1982-83 COVINGTON BUCCANEERS
The 1982-83 Covington Buccaneers put together he most successful campaign in the 11-year history of the program as they claimed the first District Championship as a team and finished a program-best 13th in the state.
Top top it off, juniors Craig Vanderhorst and Jason Kingrey became the first state placers in Buccaneer history as Vanderhorst finished 3rd at state in the 138 pound weight class and Kingrey placed 4th at state in the 167 pound weight class. Both qualified for state by claiming District Championships in their respective weight classes – becoming the fourth and fifth wrestlers in the history of the program to do so.
Vanderhorst and Kingrey also won sectional titles, as did Jim Shields (98 pounds) and Rob Vanderhorst (126 pounds). The four Sectional Champions are the most in program history. A program high seven wrestlers qualified for the District Tournament.
Overall, Covington finished with a 31-28 record as a team – going 6-6 in duals and 25-22 in tournament action. In duals, the Buccaneers defeated Valley View 42-21, Sri-Village 43-20, Lehman 46-20, Coldwater 41-26, and Indian Lake 33-32. The Buccs topped dual to West Liberty 35-42, Meadowdale 18-47, Milton-Union 3-43, Northwestern 30-33 and twice to Miami East 25-41 and 13-51.
