VERSAILLES – In the sectional tournament the Covington Buccaneers finished 6th as a team and advanced four wrestlers to the district meet next week. Plus, on Friday at Eaton, two Lady Buccs performed well, Ava Ostrov and Chloe Aselage.

As a team, the Buccaneers finished with 140.0 team points, which was sixth out of 23 teams in a very competitive tournament.

The four wrestlers who advanced to the district meet were Caleb Ryman (157), Trenton Havenar (215), Brody Taylor (106) and Weston Roth (138).

Caleb Ryman won the 157-pound weight class with a 1:21 pin against Bronston Olivera from National Trail, an 18-2 technical fall victory over Hank Smith from Versailles and a Default against Gabe Krieger from Graham. His performance that led to a sectional championship was extremely impressive.

Trenton Havenar finished 2nd in the 215-pound weight class as he advanced to the finals with a 3:14 pin over Adam Brandt from Versailles and a 19-10 major decision victory over Sam Bradford from West Liberty-Salem. In the finals against Logan Souders from Graham, Havenar suffered a serious injury early in the match to force an injury default. The overall impact of the injury is uncertain at this point, but hopefully it doesn’t end his amazing season.

Brody Taylor has battled injuries throughout the season, but was able to showcase his toughness by finishing 3rd in the 106-pound weight class. His victories were in a 45 second pin over Brair Perdue from Graham, a 50 second pin against Kolson Petty from Lehman and a 17 second pin against Cash Scott from Indian Lake. His only defeat came against Brian Fulton from Miami East in the quarterfinal.

Weston Roth, a freshman, advanced to the district meet by finishing 4th in a very loaded 138-pound weight class. He captured four wins by pins over Riley McMurchy from Arcanum, Evan Awan from Troy Christian, Keagan Kemp from Miami East, and J.J. Shirk from Indian Lake. His two losses were against Cole Brewer from Versailles and Brookes Platfoot from Graham.

Four more Buccaneers secured district alternate status by finishing fifth in their weight classes; Henry Skaggs (126), Liam Geeding (150), Diego Lopez (165) and Landon Beeman (175). Geeding won four out of six matches, Skaggs and Beeman won three out of five matches, and Lopez won two out of four matches.

Three more Buccaneer wrestlers competed hard, but came up short from placing; Eddie Deaton (120), Jonny Miller (132), and Gavin Brown (144).
