1989-90 COVINGTON BUCCANEERS

After nine seasons, Jack Schwamberger returned as the head wrestling coach, taking over for a very successful tenure of Tom Barbee where the program produced state qualifiers every season except 1988. In Schwamberger’s first tenure as head coach from 1974-1980, he built the program to success.

In Schwamberger’s return, the Buccaneer were extremely young with just two senior wrestlers on the roster. This led to some growing pains as the Buccaneers produced a 4-17 dual meet record, 19-41 tournament record and an overall record of 17-59.

And even though the Buccaneers failed to qualify a wrestler to the state meet the future is extremely bright with the talent expected to return, led by sophomore Eric Vanderhorst. Vanderhorst had a stellar season as he won a sectional title at 152 pounds.

“I would like to thank these young men on a job well done,” commented Schwamberger. “I am looking forward to the next year and all of the possibilities of a great season.”
