CASSTOWN – Covington had three wrestlers win their weight classes in the TRC and the Buccaneers finished second as a team in the league.

Bethel won the league championship with 203.5 points, which was just 6.5 points ahead of Covington (197.0), a team that didn’t have wrestlers in four weight classes (106, 113, 190 and 285). The most unfortunate situation for Covington was not having sophomore 106 pounder Brody Taylor and senior A.J. Reyes at 190 pounds.

The three Buccaneers who won their weight classes were Weston Roth (138), Caleb Ryman (157) and Trenton Havenar (215).

Weston Roth, a freshman who was seeded third, faced the deepest weight class at 138 pounds as he had to face six other wrestlers. Roth went 6-0 with four pins, a 15-5 major decision and another victory by a default.

Caleb Ryman won the 157 pound weight class with pins over Izaiah Farmer from Milton-Union (0:50) and against Alikhan Kuychiyev from Bethel (2:54).

Trenton Havenar dominated the 215 pound weight class with a 2:55 pin over Osman Shirinov from Bethel and an impressive 18-3 technical fall victory over Jace Olding from Lehman Catholic.

Five Buccaneers finished second in their weight classes; Eddie Deaton (120), Henry Skaggs (126), Gavin Brown (144), Liam Geeding (150), and Diego Lopez (165). The only defeat suffered by Eddie Deaton happened against the returning state champion, Spencer Shore from Miami East and Henry Skaggs only lost against the returning state placer, Lucas Shore from Miami East. Plus, Liam Geeding only suffered one loss to a returning state placer, Sulaiman Muhammed from Northridge.

The final two Covington wrestlers reached the podium by finishing third in their weight classes; Jonny Miller (132) and Landon Beeman (175).

“I am super proud of the way the kids wrestled today,” said Covington coach Eric Vanderhorst. “We were down a couple of wrestlers, but we were so close to winning the league championship. Still, these kids put out great effort today.”

The Buccaneers start the post-season in the Sectional Tournament next Saturday at Versailles.
