VERSAILLES – The Covington Buccaneers traveled to Versailles on Tuesday for a head-to-head dual and suffered a 60-8 loss to a very good Tigers wrestling team.

The competition against Versailles is always very tough as the Tigers are traditionally one of the best dual teams in the state. It also provides the Buccaneers an opportunity to find out what each wrestler on the team can focus on to make progression throughout the rest of the regular season to set themselves up for possible success in the post-season tournaments.

Covington had 18 points surrendered due to three weight classes without wrestlers and two varsity starters were out of the lineup due to injuries. Throughout the entire evening, the Buccaneers were only able to capture two victories, but some of the losses were exciting matches that were closed out in the final seconds.

Buccaneer senior Caleb Ryman recorded a 17-2 technical fall victory in the 157 pound weight class over Conall Miller and junior Jonny Miller pulled out a 7-4 victory over Samuel DeLand. The tight matches that ended with defeats were a 9-4 loss by Henry Skaggs at 126 pounds, an 8-7 loss by Trenton Havenar at 215 pounds and a defeat suffered by A.J. Reyes when he tried to make a critical move late in the match to capture the win. Plus, Diego Lopez was in contention for a potential victory until a five-point move in the final seconds by his opponent led to a 11-4 loss.

The Buccaneers have a week to work on improvement before hosting two duals on January 21 against Sidney and Springfield.
