TROY – Wrestling without a full lineup, the Covington Buccaneers still had a big day at the Troy Invitational on Saturday by finishing sixth as a team and crowning three individual champions.
The Buccaneers were without returning state placer Jericho Quinter, but returning state placers Michael Hagan and Chase Vanderhorst and returning state qualifier Carson Taylor all won individual titles.
Taylor (5-0 with 4 pins) won the 106 pound weight class with a 9-4 victory over T.J. Murray of Troy in the finals. Michael Hagan (5-0 with 4 pins) pinned returning state placer Corbin Kimmel in 1:19 of the 120 pound final, while Chase Vanderhorst (5-0 with 5 pins) pinned Evan Carpenter of Ben Logan in his championship match at 132 pounds.
Sophomore 215 pounder Zeb Woodward-Roeth placed fourth and freshman 138 pounder, Caleb Ryman placed fifth for the Buccaneers, while Andrew Basye (120, 2 pins), Elijah Carnes (144, 1 pin), Luke Brown (144, 1 pin), Jack Blumenstock (150, 1 pin), Kaden Thompson (150, 1 pin), Mason Epperson (157, 1 pin) and A.J. Reyes (215, 1 pin) also wrestled well.
The Buccaneers compete on Wednesday in a dual at Piqua slated for 6:00pm.
BUCCS YOUTH COMPETE AT TIPP
TIPP CITY – Covington competed at Tipp City before the holiday break at a Miami Valley Kids Wrestling Association (MVKWA) meet. The event included Lima Shawnee, Troy, Milton-Union, Miami East, Eaton, Dixie, National Trail and host Tipp City.
Taking first place for the Buccs were Gavin Brown (1 pin), Dalton Brown (2 pins), Jonathon Owens (3 pins), Carter Owen (2 pins), Grayson Feight (1 pin), Malachi Weaver (1 pin) and Oliver Ouellette (1 pin).
Finishing second were Braden Hole (2 pins), Brayden Feight (1 pin), Cyrus Trost (1 pin), Carter Neth, Ethan Owens (1 pin), Callen Owen (1 pin), Cooper Turner (1 pin), Brawley Sides (2 pins), Zaidyn Sherman (2 pins), Carson Bailey, Avrie Owens (1 pin), Jordon Critz and Jake Basye (1 pin).
Taking third place at the event were Joseph Evans (1 pin), Weston Roth (1 pin) and Wyatt Kerber (1 pin), while Aiden Cheatle placed fourth.
Each of the kids gained valuable experience and represented Covington well. The Buccs travel to the Greenville Invitational on Sunday, January 8.
