2005-06: Buccs Sweep Tri-Meet

Quentin Layman

The Covington High School wrestling team hosted a tri meet with the Lehman Cavaliers and the Graham Falcons B team and emerged victorious in both contests to improve their dual meet record to 11-1. The Falcons were coming in as champions of the Bellefontaine Invitational and fielded a very talented group of lower-weight wrestlers including returning state-placer Zac Thomusseit at 140 lbs.

In their match with Graham, the Buccs found the going tough from the 103 lb class through 140 lbs, as they dropped each match to the Falcons and yielded 38 team points. Covington stormed back in the middle to upper weights, however, winning the final seven bouts by either a pin or technical fall to claim a narrow 41-38 victory.

The Buccs squared off against Lehman in their next dual and won a little more convincingly, taking 10 of the 14 bouts and claiming a 55-24 victory over the Cavaliers. Graham B won the remaining dual of night, defeating Lehman by a 58-24 score.

Going 2-0 for the Buccs were Logan Hall (145 lbs, 1 pin), Bobby Wiltshire (152 lbs, 1 pin), Ryan White (160 lbs, 1 pin, 1 tech. fall), Brian Ely (171 lbs, 2 pins) and Logan Brown (189 lbs, 2 pins). Going 1-1 for Covington were Sam Herron (103 lbs, 1 pin), Jordan Tebbe (112 lbs), Jake Jennings (119 lbs, 1 pin), Quentin Layman (125 lbs, 1 pin) and Justin McMillion (140 lbs). Also competing for the Buccs were Jesse Pearson (135 lbs), who almost emerged with a pin vs. Lehman, and Cody Swabb (130 lbs).

In reserve action, the Buccs went undefeated on the night as Michael Corkhum (112 lbs) earned a pin over Jordan Bair of Graham and both Travis Wamer (152 lbs) and Nick Christian (160 lbs) went 2-0 with 2 pins apiece. The Buccs travel next to Troy on Friday and Saturday to compete in the 16-team Troy Invitational.
