The Covington high school wrestling team split their duals Wednesday night as they hosted Brookville and Mechanicsburg. The Buccs defeated Brookville, 63-15, before falling to Mechanicsburg, 45-31, to make their season dual meet record 8-2 thus far.

Carl Lankford (285) opened with a forfeit against the Blue Devils, before Alexis Roth (106) fell to Devon Miller. Connor Ryan (113) then picked up a forfeit, followed by a Jared Ford pin at 120 lbs. Coleman Ryan (126) then received a forfeit before Jarred Ganger (132) earned a pin and Ryan Ford (138) earned a technical fall.

Josh Sowers (145) then picked up a major decision, followed by a Lance Miller pin at 152 lbs. Deron White (160) then dropped a close decision, before Gage DeHart (170) answered with a pin. Ben Miller (195) and Seth Thomas (220) then received forfeits to conclude the dual.

Against Mechanicsburg, the Buccs’ Connor Ryan (113) dropped a tough decision to Tyler Wetzel, before Jared Ford answered with a pin at 120 lbs. Coleman Ryan (126) then picked up an exciting 6-5 victory over Sam Rozmus, followed by a pin by Jarred Ganger (132).

Ryan Ford (138) then extended the Buccs lead, 19-3, with a major decision over Cory Bogon. Mechanicsburg’s state placer Joe Zeigler and state champion Kaleb Romero then defeated Josh Sowers (145) and Deron White (152), respectively.

Lance Miller (160) responded for the Buccs with a first period pin. Gage DeHart (170) fell to state qualifier Logan Hartman, and then Mechanicsburg took the lead as the Buccs’ forfeited the 182 lb. class. Covington’s Ben Miller (195) got the lead back for the Buccs with a pin, before Mechanicsburg won the final three matches over Seth Thomas (220), Carl Lankford (285) and Alexis Roth (106) to take the dual.

Joey Schmelzer (145) and Logan Fields (152) picked up victories in reserve action, while Mark Barga (145), Levi Brown (160), Ross Bowman (160) and Bryce Keiser (220) each gained valuable experience.

The Buccs compete next at the Versailles Invitational on Saturday, December 20. Wrestling starts at 10 am.
