THE VANDERHORST BROTHERS EARNED SCHOLAR ALL-AMERICAN HONORS

DANVILLE, VA – Cael and Chase Vanderhorst, two brothers who graduated at Covington High School and wrestle now at Ohio Northern University, both earned an elite honor as Scholar All-Americans after finishing in the top-six of their weight classes in the Division III Region IV tournament and recording 4.0 GPAs academically.

At Danville, Virginia in the NCAA Division III Regional IV Tournament, both brothers performed very well by finishing in the top-six of their weight classes.

Cael Vanderhorst, a senior, finished runner-up in the 149 pound weight class, which qualified him for the NCAA Division III National Championships on March 14 and 15 at Providence, Road Island.

He opened up with a 4:34 pin against Noah Diamond from Shenandoah University and then recorded a 12-1 major decision victory over Cameron Curva from Ferrum. Cael advanced to the finals with a 2-0 victory over Emmanuel Scrods from Baldwin Wallace, but dropped a very close in a 4-1 sudden victory loss to Taylor Smith from Washington & Jefferson.

Cael enters the National Championship tournament with an impressive 29-9 record.

Chase Vanderhorst, a freshman, was in contention to earn his spot at the NCAA Division III National Championships, but suffered an unfortunate injury that prevented him from finishing in the top three in the 133 pound weight class.

Chase opened up with a 15-0 technical fall victory over Eric Saddler from Otterbein University and advanced to the semifinal round with a 14-3 major decision victory over Trent Proctor from Ferrum. After losing in the semifinals to Jonah Paulino from Roanoke College, Chase suffered a major shoulder injury that ended his freshman season. He finished in sixth placed at 133 pounds and closed out his freshman year with an impressive 21-13 record – two of the losses due to the injury.
