JANUARY 17, 2019 – WEST MILTON
Late in January and into February is when wrestlers hope to be peaking at the right time as the OHSAA Duals and post-season tournaments are right around the corner.
And if Thursday’s impressive victories over two solid programs in Coldwater and Milton-Unon are any indication, the Covington Buccaneers appear to be headed in the right direction.
Covington opened up the evening with a dominating 55-21 win over Coldwater after building a 46-0 lead heading into the match at 160 pounds. Coldwater was able to win four of the final six matches, but the Buccs had already sealed the contest.
The Buccaneers then faced Milton-Union, who unfortunately didn’t fill every weight class. Still, Milton had quality wrestlers at the weights it was able to fill.
Covington responded to the quality competition the Bulldogs possessed by rolling to the 57-18 win.
Going 2-0 for Covington were Kellan Anderson (113, 2 pins), Cael Vanderhorst (120, pin), Caleb Miller (145, pin), Keringten Martin (152, pin), Duncan Cooper (170, pin) and Gavin McReynolds (182).
Finishing 1-1 for the Buccs were Devin Newhouse (106), Connor Sindelir (126, pin), Riley Richards (132), Austin Flick (138), Dylan Burns (160), Jesse Fisher (195), Dylan Staudt (220) and Clayton Stephan (285).
In JV action, Trentin Alexander (170) picked up a pin while Bryce Smith dropped a back-and-forth match.
Covington’s Jr. High improved their dual meet record to 5-1 with a 48-15 win over Milton-Union and a 45-33 victory over Coldwater.
Going 2-0 for the Buccs were Michael Hagan (80), Dalton Bishop (86), Jericho Quinter (92, 2 pins), Chase Vanderhorst (110, pin), Aaron Jackson (116, pin) and Bryce Staudt (172, 2 pins). Kaden Hughes (110, pin) and Banks Koffer (110) both went 1-0.
Going 1-1 were Tanner Garrett (104, pin), Trey Schmelzer (122, pin), Brian Morrison (128) and Trey Kiser (142, pin). Also competing well for the Buccs were Cam Ha (160) and Charles Morrison (205).
The Buccaneer varsity team has eight days to prepare for more stiff competition at the LCC Invitational on January 25th and 26th.
