DAY ONE: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2024
VANDALIA – Covington had nine wrestlers competing in the first day of GMVWA Holiday Tournament and three advanced to the second day with an opportunity to earn a placement.
Junior Caleb Ryman advanced to the semifinals at 150 pounds by winning his first three matches, two on tech.falls and one on a 4-1 decision in the quarterfinals. He will face Devin Caito of Bellbrook tomorrow in the semifinal round.
Freshman Brody Taylor and sophomore Henry Skaggs are still in contention in the consolation rounds as both won two out of their first three matches. Taylor opened up the tournament with a 40 second pin, but lost his second match to fall into the consolation bracket. He then won again on a 34 second pin and will need to win at least two more straight matches to earn a placement at 106 pounds.
At 126 pounds, Skaggs captured a thrilling 6-3 win on a takedown in overtime in his first match and followed up with an unfortunate defeat to drop into the consolation bracket. He then won via a 4:13 pin in his first consolation match and will need to win two more straight matches to earn placement.
Despite not advancing to the second day, sophomore Eddie Deaton (113 pounds), sophomore Jonny Miller (138 pounds), senior Jack Blumenstock (157 pounds) and senior Kaden Thompson (165 pounds) all won one out of three matches. Also competing in the tournament were freshman Isaiah Mumford (132 pounds) and sophomore Lucas Lester (175 pounds).
Covington is now 15th out of 31 teams in the smaller divisions with 41.0 team points.
DAY TWO: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2024
VANDALIA – Despite only having nine wrestlers able to compete, the Covington Buccaneers had a great weekend at the annual GMVWA Holiday Tournament.
The highlight of the tournament for the Buccaneers was the performance of junior Caleb Ryman as he dominated the 150 pound weight class to win the championship. He is the first Covington wrestler to win that tournament since Kellan Anderson won the 106 pound weight class in 2018.
Ryman opened the tournament on Friday with a 15-0 technical fall victory over Andrew Clayton of Taylor County and then followed up with a 17-2 technical fall victory over Judah Carey of Boyle County. In the quarterfinals, Caleb defeated Trey Gregory from Buford with a 4-1 decision.
On Saturday in the semifinal round, Caleb recorded a major decision victory by the score of 12-2 over Devin Caito from Bellbrook. In his championship match, Caleb put together yet another dominating performance as he defeated Evan Hemmeter from Springboro 19-4, which was his third technical fall victory in the tournament.
Ryman, who has already reached the 100 career victory milestone, is now 21-0 in his junior season.
Two more Buccaneers advanced to the second day of the tournament, freshman 106 pounder Brody Taylor and sophomore 126 pounder Henry Skaggs. Both put forth a great effort, but came up short from placing.
After winning two out of his first three matches on Friday, Brody Taylor started off strong on Saturday with a 28 second pin over Dillon Lewis from Fairdale to put himself within one victory to earn a spot on the podium. Unfortunately, Taylor lost his next match to Layton Combs from Vandalia-Butler.
Henry Skaggs also won two out of his first three matches on Friday to put himself in contention for a podium spot on Saturday, but lost his first match in the second day of the tournament to Talon Freese from Washington CH.
The Buccaneers finished tied for 13th out of 31 teams in the smaller divisions with 61.5 team points.
