2013-14: BUCCS CELEBRATE SENIOR NIGHT IN STYLE

The Covington high school wrestling team won their double-dual meet on Monday in impressive fashion and extended their unbeaten streak to 20 victories. The Buccs squared off against Milton-Union in the first round and defeated the Bulldogs, 57-21, before shutting out Arcanum, 77-0, in the second round to improve their season record to 20-0. The Trojans defeated Lehman, 39-18, in round one to advance.

Ben Miller (170) got Covington on the board with a pin over Milton’s Zach Bambi. Brandon Magee (182) then picked up a forfeit before A.J. Ouellette (195) earned a pin over Jeff Strawer. Justin Daniel (220) then earned a forfeit, before the Milton’s Matt Bracci pinned Jordan Wolfe (285).

The Buccs rebounded with a Connor Ryan (106) forfeit before Milton’s Kamron Paulus picked up technical fall over Coleman Ryan (113). Josh Sowers (120) received a forfeit, followed by Branden Robinson’s pin over Klay Powers at 126 lbs. Jarred Ganger (132) then pinned Logan Dillon, followed by an exciting 6-0 decision by Ryan Ford (138) over Milton’s state qualifier Chase Mayabb.

Milton responded as Austin Menker came from behind to pin Deron White (145) and Same Hemmerick earned a major decision over Logan Fields (152). Covington would have the last victory though, for the 57-21 win, as Daniel Jennings (160) pinned Canaan Berry. Covington’s Jacob Buchanan (126) then picked up a pin in JV action.

The Buccs then posted a rare shutout against Arcanum, winning 77-0. Connor Ryan (106), Branden Robinson (126), Jarred Ganger (132), Daniel Jennings (152) and Justin Daniels (220) each earned pins. Brandon Magee (182) and A.J. Ouellette (195) both picked up major decisions, while Josh Sowers (120) earned an 11-4 victory. Receiving forfeits for Covington were Coleman Ryan (113), Ryan Ford (138), Deron White (145), Logan Fields (152), Ben Miller (170) and Jordan Wolfe (285).

Covington’s Jr. High team also had a great night of wrestling as they improved their dual meet record to 6-2. The Buccs defeated a strong Milton-Union team, 45-30, before coming away with a 50-30 victory over Piqua in round 2. Piqua defeated a combined Lehman/Arcanum team, 33-27, to advance in the first round.

Going undefeated for Covington were Chris Triplett (86), Keringten Martin (104), Jared Ford (110), Joey Schmelzer (128), Gage DeHart (142) and Ethan Herron (150). Splitting their matches were Dolan Young (80), Caleb Brooks (122), Jacob McQuinn (134) and Bryce Keiser (205). Also competing and wrestling well for the Buccs were Kris Barnhart (92), Alexis Roth (98) Riley Richards (104) and Gavin McReynolds (116).

Covington hosts the first three rounds of the OHSAA Regional Dual Meet tournament on Wednesday, January 22, at the high school. Wrestling starts at 6 pm. The Buccs get a bye in round one and face the winner of Troy Christian and Triad in round 2.
