FEBRUARY 8, 2014 – COVINGTON
The Covington High School wrestling team closed out their dual meet season in impressive fashion by taking first out of seven teams at the Covington Duals Invitational and finishing with a 28-1 overall dual meet record for the season. Miami East placed second, followed by National Trail.
The Buccs opened with a 64-9 victory over Tri-County North, followed by a 58-12 triumph over Arcanum. Covington then defeated National Trail, 59-24, before earning a 76-3 victory over Lehman. In the finals, the Buccs defeated runners-up Miami East, 71-12.
Going undefeated on the day with 5-0 records were Connor Ryan (106 lbs, tech. fall), Coleman Ryan (113 lbs, pin), Josh Sowers (120, 4 pins), Jared Ganger (126, pin, tech. fall), Ryan Ford (132, 4 pins), Lance Miller (138, pin, 2 tech. falls), Ben Miller (182, pin, tech. fall) and A.J. Ouellette (195, 3 pins). Branden Robinson (126, 2 pins) finished 2-0.
Finishing 4-1 overall were Deron White (145, 4 pins) and Daniel Jennings (152, 2 pins, tech. fall), while Brandon Magee (170, 2 pins, tech. fall) and Ian Fries (220, pin) both went 3-2. Also wrestling well and winning matches for the Buccs were Jacob Buchanan (126), Michael Cox (132), Ross Bowman (145), Logan Fields (152), Justin Daniel (195, 2 pins) and Carl Lankford (285).
Covington’s Jr. High team also finished in first place at the tournament, while Miami East took second. The Buccs defeated Miami East, 49-35, Arcanum, 64-0, Lehman, 46-9, Tri-County North, 45-27, and National Trail, 54-18. The team concluded their season with a 12-3 dual meet record and 35-7 tournament record.
Finishing with 5-0 records on the day were Chris Triplett (86, 2 pins), Keringten Martin (104, pin, tech. fall) and Joey Schmelzer (128, pin, tech. fall), while Riley Richards (104, pin) went 2-0. Going 4-1 were Dolan Young (80, 2 pins), Jared Ford (110, tech. fall), Ethan Herron (150, pin) and Bryce Keiser (205, pin). Finishing 3-2 were Alexis Roth (98), Caleb Brooks (122) and Jacob McQuinn (134, 2 pins), while Gavin McReynolds (tech. fall) went 2-2 overall. Also wrestling well and winning was Kris Barnhart (98 lbs).
