2018-19: BUCCS ROLL IN NORTHEASTERN INVITE

Covington’s wrestling team put in a strong performance during the opening rounds of the Northeastern Dual Meet Invitational. The Buccs won all three of their duals in convincing fashion before getting a bye in round 4. Covington opened with a 66-15 victory over Springfield Shawnee, followed by a 75-6 win over Springfield Northwestern, then defeated Waynesville 78-6. The team’s reserve wrestlers were able to fill in open spots on other teams and also performed well.

Going undefeated for the Buccs were Devin Newhouse (106), Kellan Anderson (113, pin), Cael Vanderhorst (120, 3 pins), Connor Sindelir (126, 2 pins), Riley Richards (132, 3 pins), Austin Flick (145), Keringten Martin (152, 2 pins), Gavin Swank (152, pin), Bryce Smith (152, pin), Duncan Cooper (170, 3 pins), Gavin McReynolds (182, 3 pins), Gage Kerrigan (195, pin) and Jesse Fisher (220, pin).

Picking up a pair of victories were Caleb Miller (138, 2 pins), Fletcher Metz (145), Dylan Burns (160, 2 pins), Ricky Stephan (182, 2 pins) and Dylan Staudt (220). Also winning matches for the Buccs were David Robinson (145, pin), Jensen Wagoner (160, pin), Tyler Bauer (160, pin), Seth Iddings (170, pin) and Clayton Stephan (285).

Covington finished strong during the second day of the Northeastern Invitational, winning all of their duals to finish in 1st place out of nine teams with an 8-0 dual meet record. The Buccs opened with a 69-15 victory over Urbana, followed by a 72-6 win over Beavercreek B. Covington then defeated Kenton Ridge, 69-12, Hillsboro, 72-9 and Northeastern, 71-12.

The Buccs had seven individual champions at the tournament who finished with 8-0 records – Devin Newhouse (106), Kellan Anderson (113, pin), Cael Vanderhorst (120, 5 pins), Riley Richards (126, 6 pins), Austin Flick (145, 3 pins), Keringten Martin (152, 6 pins) and Gage Kerrigan (195, 4 pins).

Taking second for the team were Caleb Miller (126, 6-2, 5 pins), Dylan Burns (160, 7-1, 4 pins) and Gavin McReynolds (182, 7-1, 6 pins). Duncan Cooper (170, 3 pins) and Jesse Fisher (220, 3 pins) both took third.

Connor Sindelir (126, 6-2, 4 pins), Dylan Staudt (220, 5-3, 4 pins) and Clayton Stephan (285, 4-4, pin) also had strong performances for Covington. Also winning matches for the Buccs were David Robinson (145, pin), Fletcher Metz (145), Gavin Swank (145, pin), Bryce Smith (152, pin), Tyler Bauer (160, pin), Jensen Wagoner (160, 2 pins), Seth Iddings (170, 2 pins) and Ricky Stephan (182, 3 pins).

Covington travels to Versailles on Tuesday, December 4, for a combined high school and jr. high dual against the Tigers at 6 pm.
