BUCCS PERFORM WELL IN SEASON OPENER

MECHANICSBURG – Covington put in a solid team performance at the Mechanicsburg Invitational on Saturday, finishing in 3rd place out of 17 teams overall. The Buccs finished with five top-four individual placers, three finalists and two champions at the event.

Due to low numbers in the 106 lb. weight class, Brody Taylor elected to move up to 113 lbs., where he won the tournament despite giving up quite a bit of size. Taylor finished 5-0 with 4 pins and earned a 10-3 decision over Southeastern’s Logan Moraleja in the finals.

Returning state qualifier Caleb Ryman won the 150 lb. weight class with a 15-0 technical fall victory over Springfield Catholic Central’s Ben Thomas. His toughest match, however, was in the semifinals where he defeated the no. 10 ranked wrestler in the state, Logan Souders of Graham, 7-3. Ryman finished 5-0 overall with 2 pins.

Henry Skaggs advanced to the 126 lb. finals where he fell to Mechanicsburg’s returning state qualifier Nolan Fraley. Skaggs finished 4-1 overall with 4 pins.

Mason Epperson (215) placed 3rd overall with a 3-1 record with 2 pins, while Aveyen Meek (175) finished in 4th place with a 3-2 record with 3 pins.

Also winning matches for the Buccs were Eddie Deaton (120 lbs., 8th place), Jonny Miller (132, 7th place, 2 pins), Liam Geeding (144, 9th place, 3 pins), Jack Blumenstock (157, 6th place, 3 pins), Diego Lopez (165, 7th place) and Kaden Thompson (175, 7th place, 3 pins).

Milton-Union Jr. High Invitational

Covington finished in 7th place out of 17 teams at the Milton-Union Jr. High Invitational, with eleven wrestlers competing at the event, including four top-4 individual placers.

Mason Ouellette (86 lbs.) claimed the tournament championship, while Gavin Brown (122) finished as tournament runner-up. Ouellete advanced to the finals with a bye, a pin and a major decision, before pinning Miami East’s Isaiah Friend in the finals. Brown earned 3 consecutive pins to advance to the finals before falling to Tippecanoe’s Alex Eilerman.

Wyatt Kerber (116) finished in 3rd place with his only loss to the eventual champion and former Covington youth wrestler Callen Owen of Troy. Kerber earned 4 victories including a 6-5 decision over Tippecanoe’s Kaden Holtzapple in the finals.

Cooper Turner finished in 4th place after dropping his opening bout, then putting together 4 consecutive victories, including 3 pins. Haydan Wintrow (245, pin) fell one win short of placing. Also wrestling well and earning victories for the Buccs were Alex Salinas (110, pin) and Weston Roth (134, pin),

Chloe Aselage competed in the Mechanicsburg Middle School Girls Invitational on Sunday and finished with a 2-2 record with 2 pins.

Covington Jr. High travels to Tippecanoe on Wednesday, December 11, for a tri meet with Tipp and Northmont.
