2017-18: Buccs Go 8-0 At Northeastern Invite

Covington kept things rolling at the Northeastern Invitational on Saturday, winning five more duals to finish with an 8-0 record and first place overall.

The Buccs started with a 75-6 victory over West Liberty-Salem, followed by a 54-28 win over Hillsboro. The team then defeated Northeastern, 64-12, before winning 71-9 over Waynesville. Covington claimed the championship with a 54-25 victory over Northwestern.

Taking first place for the Buccs with 8-0 records were Kellan Anderson (106, 3 pins), Cael Vanderhorst (113, 6 pins) and Keringten Martin (152, 4 pins).

Finishing in second place were Riley Richards (126, 7-1, 7 pins), Fletcher Metz (145, 6-2, 6 pins), Hunter Clarkson (152, 6-0, 6 pins) and Duncan Cooper (160, 7-1, 4 pins). Kyle Barga (132, 6-2, 6 pins) took third place overall.

Grant Babylon (285, 3 pins) went 5-0, Trentin Alexander (152, 5 pins) went 5-1, and Gavin Swank (145, 4 pins) finished 4-2 overall. Finishing with 5-3 records were Taylen Viney (120, pin), Austin Flick (138, 2 pins), Gavin McReynolds (170, pin), and Dylan Staudt (220). Gage Kerrigan (182) picked up 3 forfeits for the Buccs.

Also competing well and winning matches for the Buccs were Joseph Franke (195, pin), Bryce Smith (138, 2 pins), Deacon Shields (145, 2 pins), Seth Iddings (160, 2 pins) and Bryce Keiser (285, 2 pins).

Covington had a nice start to the Northeastern Invitational on Friday night, going 3-0 in duals with one bye. The Buccs will return on Saturday and wrestle in five additional duals.

Covington opened with a 41-29 victory over Urbana, followed by a 62-12 win over Springfield Shawnee and a 54-22 victory over Kenton Ridge.

Going 3-0 for the Buccs were Kellan Anderson (106 lbs, pin), Cael Vanderhorst (113, 3 pins), Keringten Martin (152, 2 pins) and Grant Babylon (285, 2 pins). Also going undefeated in varsity matches, wrestling with other teams, were Gavin Swank (145, 1-0, pin), Hunter Clarkson (152, 2-0, 2 pins) and Trentin Alexander (152, 2-0, 2 pins).

Going 2-1 were Riley Richards (126, tech.fall), Fletcher Metz (145, 2 pins), Duncan Cooper (160, pin), Gavin McReynolds (170, pin), Joseph Franke (195) and Dylan Staudt (220).

Gage Kerrigan picked up a forfeit at 182 lbs. Also competing well for the Buccs were Taylen Viney (120), Kyle Barga (132), Austin Flick (138), Bryce Smith (138), Deacon Shields (145), Seth Iddings (160) and Bryce Keiser (285).

The Buccs High School and Jr. High host Versailles on Tuesday December 5 at 6:30 pm.
