CINCINNATI – Cael Vanderhorst and Chase Vanderhorst, two brothers who were three-time state placers in wrestling at Covington High School, are now having great success at Ohio Northern University.
Covington’s wrestling tradition is extremely strong and there have been several athletes who have had success at the collegiate level over the years. The reason, the hard work put in by those wrestlers by taking advantage of the opportunities to maximize their potential, which is available by the culture established within the program since it was started in 1973.
In regards to Cael and Chase, these two brothers started developing in youth wrestling and their hard work led to amazing high school careers where they each became three-time state placers. They also added to the Vanderhorst family tradition where family members accumulated 8 state medals and qualified for state 12 times.
Now, Cael and Chase are competing at a high level in college as starters in the Ohio Northern University program. Both brothers showcased their wrestling skills on Thursday at Mount St. Joseph.
Senior Cael Vanderhorst, who wrestles at 149 pounds, dominated in an impressive 8-1 victory over Andrew Magness. Cael advanced his record to 15-5 on the season with three pins, three technical falls and three major decisions. Despite suffering an injury that cost him his entire junior season a year ago, Cael’s overall career record at this point is 63-20 with 18 pins, 10 technical falls and 10 major decisions.
At 133 pounds, freshman Chase Vanderhorst put together a dominating victory as well as he defeated Jordan Zigo, which ended as a major decision by the score of 15-2. Chase is now 17-8 with six pins, six technical falls and two major decisions.
Overall, its was a great night for Ohio Northern University as the Polar Bears won 44-0 over Mount St. Joseph. The victory was the 400th career win for head coach Ron Beaschler, who is now in his 37th year.
