2003-04: Buccs Finish 4-5 in Northeastern Duals

Northeastern Tournament – Friday Night
Covington started off strong tonight, defeating Triad, 52-24, and Mechanicsburg, 49-12, but then dropped two close duals to Urbana, 32-39, and West Liberty Salem, 30-38, to finish the night with a 2-2 record.

Three wrestlers went undefeated for the Buccs – Ben Adams (4-0) at 140 lbs., Brian Ely (4-0, 2 pins, 1 tech. fall) at 171 lbs., and Logan Brown (4-0, 3 pins) at 189 lbs. Three more wrestlers had only one loss – Ryan White (3-1, 1 pin) at 130 lbs., C.J. Potter (3-1, 2 pins) at 215 lbs., and Ezra Mohler (3-1, 1 pin), at 275 lbs.

Also competing for Covington were Ritchie Watkins (2-2, 1 pin) at 125 lbs., Brandon Hartzell (2-2, 1 pin) at 145 lbs., Ryan Vanderhorst (2-2, 2 pins) at 152 lbs. and Justin Mahan (2-2, 1 pin) at 160 lbs. The Buccs forfeited the 103, 112, 119 and 135 lb. weight classes.

Wrestling begins Saturday at noon, where Covington will first face Springfield North followed by Kenton Ridge, Springfield Catholic Central, Northeastern and Northwestern.

Northeastern Tournament – Saturday Night
Covington finished the tournament with a 4-5 overall dual meet record, posting a 2-3 record on Saturday. Northwestern finished first, followed by Springfield North. The Buccs defeated Kenton Ridge, 42-40, and Springfield Catholic Central, 48-12, and lost to Springfield North, 27-51, Northeastern, 20-54, and Northwestern, 29-52. On Saturday, the Buccs had to give up as many as 30 points by forfeiting the 103, 112, 119, 125 and 135 lb. weight classes.

Three wrestlers were crowned tournament champions by going undefeated for the Buccs. Ben Adams went 9-0 with 3 pins at 140 lbs., Brian Ely went 9-0 with 5 pins and 1 tech. fall at 171 lbs., and Logan Brown went 9-0 with 8 pins at 189 lbs. Also placing for the Buccs were Brandon Hartzell, 3rd place at 145 lbs. (7-2, 6 pins), Ritchie Watkins, 4th place at 125 lbs. (4-2, 2 pins), C.J. Potter, 5th place at 215 lbs. (4-5, 2 pins), and Ezra Mohler, 5th place at 275 lbs. (5-4, 3 pins).

Also competing for Covington were Ryan White (4-5, 2 pins) at 130 lbs., Ryan Vanderhorst (3-6, 2 pins) at 152 lbs., and Justin Mahan (4-5, 1 pin) at 160 lbs. In reserve action, Bobby Wiltshire, who will soon be the varsity 135 lber., went undefeated at 140 lbs., and newcomer Justin Owens picked up his first win via pin at 145 lbs.

Covington will be traveling up north next Saturday (12/13) to compete in the Lincolnview Invitational.
