The Covington Buccs wrestled well but repeatedly came up on the short end in all but one of their duals at the six-team Miami East Invitational. Although the Buccs finished with a 1-4 record on the day, they were one match away in each contest from finishing undefeated. Covington gave Dixie, the tournament champion, their toughest match, losing 32-35. They were also in a tight contest with tournament runner-up Miami East, falling 39-41. The Buccs lost to Northwestern, 34-42, and Springfield Shawnee, 36-46, but came away with a 51-24 victory over a Troy squad composed of reserve and some varsity wrestlers.
The Buccs probably wrestled the best against Dixie, currently ranked #1 among Division 3 teams in the Miami Valley. Covington was forced to give up 18 points due to forfeits, but still managed to win seven of the eleven matches wrestled to lose by just three points.
At 189 lbs., Logan Brown went undefeated on the day with a 5-0 record and 4 pins, and is currently 32-0 on the season. Bobby Wiltshire (140 lbs., 2 pins), Logan Hall (145 lbs.) and Ryan Vanderhorst (152 lbs., 2 pins) each finished 4-1. Hall upped his season record to 20-12 while Wiltshire and Vanderhorst now stand at 21-10.
Going 3-2 at the tournament were Jordan Tebbe (112 lbs., 17-9 record), Ryan White (130 lbs., 15-15), Justin McMillion (135 lbs, 11-10), Brian Ely (171 lbs., 26-8) and C.J. Potter (275 lbs., 16-12). Kyle Chalmers (160 lbs.) and Jacob Wise (215 lbs.), who both wrestle opponents who are considerably larger than them in order fill weight classes for the team, finished 2-3 and 1-4, respectively.
The Buccs compete next at the Ben Logan Invitational on Saturday, January 22. Wrestling starts at 9:30 am and finals begin at 6:15 pm.
