2007-08: BANGED UP BUCCS TAKE SEVENTH AT TROY

After the first two rounds of wrestling at the Troy Invitational, Covington advanced four wrestlers into the semifinals. The team was in third place after the first round, but team standings weren’t available yet after the second round.

At 119 lbs, Sam Herron advanced with a bye and a second-period pin over Michael Graham of Northwestern. At 130 lbs, Andrew DeHart also advanced with a bye, followed by a second-period pin over Steve Riley of Fairborn. Jake Jennings (152 lbs) won his opening round match over Northwestern’s George McGill with a 14-3 major decision, then advanced to the semi’s with a 10-5 decision over Tipp City’s Casey Beck. Also advancing to the semifinal round was Logan Hall (171 lbs) who earned consecutive pins over Troy’s Dominique Foster and Miami East’s Zach Ramey.

Winning their opening bouts before dropping into the consolation bracket were Matt Breisch (112 lbs), Tyler Tebbe (125 lbs), Josh McMillion (140 lbs) and Justin McMillion (160 lbs). Joining them in tomorrow’s consolation bracket are Zack Shilt (103 lbs) and Aaron Devenport (145 lbs).

The Covington wrestling team finished up in 7th place out of 16 teams at the Troy Invitational with 109 points. The team was in 8th place heading into the final round and managed to pass Miami East (107.5 pts.), but fell a little short in catching Springfield North (111 pts.)

Leading the way for the Buccs was freshman Andrew DeHart (130 lbs) who claimed the championship with a second-period pin over top-seed Jordan Bair of Graham, after building a 6-0 lead. DeHart advanced to the finals with a 15-5 major decision over Kyle Lyons of Troy.

Also advancing to the finals was Logan Hall (171 lbs). Hall earned a tight 5-4 decision over Indian Lake’s Dane Cope in the semifinals, but defaulted his final match to Hillsboro’s Greg Rhoads to take second place.

Placing fifth for the Buccs was Sam Herron (119 lbs) and Josh McMillion (140 lbs). Herron won his final match by default over Troy’s Cole Cochran, while McMillion earned a pin over Indian Lake’s Mikael Neeley. Finishing in sixth place for Covington was Zach Shilt (119 lbs) and Jake Jennings (152 lbs).

Also winning matches and scoring team points for the Buccs were Matt Breisch (112 lbs), Tyler Tebbe (125 lbs), Aaron Devenport (145 lbs) and Justin McMillion (160 lbs).

Covington will wrestle next on Tuesday, January 15, when they host a tri-meet with Tipp City and Troy at 6 pm.
