2008-09: Buccs Host Coldwater and Lehman in Tri-Meet

The Covington high school wrestling team hosted the Coldwater Cavaliers and the Lehman Cavaliers on Thursday night, splitting their duals and finishing 1-1 overall. In the opening dual, Coldwater blanked Lehman, 66-0. In the second round, the Buccs faced Coldwater in what turned out to be a very competitive dual.

Coldwater took the early lead with a forfeit at 112 lbs. before Covington’s Sam Angle (119) would answer with a 17-7 major decision over Alex Timmerman. Matt Briesch would then give the Buccs a 10-6 lead after picking up a forfeit at 125 lbs. At 130, Coldwater’s Brock Timmerman turned a 2-point match into a pin over Brandon Flora as the Cavaliers led 12-10. Ben Wilson (135) then picked up a forfeit for the Buccs, while Cory Ely dropped a decision at 140, as the Buccs clinged to a 16-15 lead.

Andrew DeHart would get Covington rolling again at 145 lbs, with an 18-2 technical fall over Trevor Kunk. Josh McMillion (152) followed suit with a 14-4 major decision over Corey Kuether, then Jake Jennings helped build a 28-15 Covington lead with an 11-7 decision over Jordan Grieshop.

Covington’s Aaron Devenport, wrestling at 171 lbs. – two weight classes from his norm, battled Coldwater’s Dustin Gillis in a back-and-forth match before getting caught in the second period. Coldwater would follow with a pin at 189 lbs over Covington’s Josh Shefbuch to cut their deficit to 27-28. The dual then belonged to the Cavaliers as they picked up forfeits at 215, 285 and 103 lbs. to take the 45-28 victory over the Buccs.

Covington’s varsity 135 lber, Tyler Tebbe, elected to wrestle Coldwater’s varsity wrestler, Josh Boeckman, in a JV match at 140 lbs since Boeckman didn’t make weight at 135 lbs. Tebbe would go on to win a solid 4-0 victory in the bout. In other JV action, Covington’s Deven Selanders picked up a number of takedowns before earning a pin over Trevor Koch, while Cody Swabb dropped his match at 152 lbs to Mitch Kaiser.

In their final dual, Covington won all of their matches wrestled against Lehman, winning 60-18 overall. Picking up pins for Covington were Tyler Tebbe (135), Josh McMillion (152), Aaron Devenport (171) and Josh Shefbuch (189). Also winning for the Buccs via forfeit were Sam Angle (119), Lon Bitner (125), Brandon Flora (130), Cory Ely (140), Andrew DeHart (145) and Jake Jennings (160).

The reserve team travels to the Sidney JV Invitational on Saturday while the varsity squad travels to Dixie on Tuesday, Jan. 27. The varsity team’s meet with Troy, Tipp City and Miami East has been rescheduled for 6 pm on Thursday, Jan. 29, at Troy.
