2009-10: Buccs Claim 3rd Straight Northeastern Title

The Covington high school wrestling team had a nice start at the Northeastern Invitational Friday night. The Buccs went 4-0 on the evening, defeating Dayton Christian 61-9, Northwestern 66-19, Triad 78-6, and Springfield 66-19.

Going 4-0 for the Buccs were Matt Breisch (119, 3 pins), Jake Sowers (125, 3 pins), Sam Angle (130, 2 pins, 1 major), Kyler Deeter (135, 1 pin), Tyler Tebbe (140, 2 pins, 1 tech. fall), Andrew DeHart (152, 3 pins) and Brian Olson (171, 1 pin).

Finishing 3-1 were Brock Smith (103), Bryton Lear (112, 1 pin), Dylan Gustin (145, 3 pins), Josh McMillion (160, 3 pins) and Josh Shefbuch (189, 3 pins).

Also competing for Covington were D.J. Seger (125), Alex Bitner (130), Lon Bitner (140), Aaron Devenport (152), Cody Adams (160) and Jamie Hess (285).

On Saturday, the Buccs open with Urbana, then face Waynesville and West Liberty-Salem. They then finish against Northeastern and Fairborn – duals which will likely decide the tournament champions.

The Covington high school wrestling team captured their third consecutive Northeastern Invitational title on Saturday. The Buccs entered the day with a 4-0 tournament record and kept going strong, winning five duals to finish 9-0 overall at the tournament. The Buccs defeated Urbana 72-12, Waynesville 76-0, West Liberty-Salem 54-18, Northeastern 50-24 and Fairborn 54-27.

Finishing a perfect 9-0 and taking first place for Covington were Matt Briesch (119), Sam Angle (130), Kyler Deeter (135), Tyler Tebbe (140) and Andrew DeHart (152). Taking second place with 8-1 records were Brock Smith (103) and Josh McMillion (160). Earning third place medals with 7-2 records were Bryton Lear (112) and Aaron Devenport (152). Lear competed in his first ever tournament as he has only been wrestling for a month.

Also competing for the Buccs and earning valuable team points were Jake Sowers (125), D.J. Seger (125), Alex Bitner (130), Lon Bitner (135), Dylan Gustin (145), Cody Adams (160), Brian Olson (189), Josh Shefbuch (215) and Jamie Hess (285).

The Buccs host the Mechanicsburg Indians – a team that finished 5th in the state last season – along with Lehman in a tri-meet on Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 5 pm.
