The Covington High School wrestling team competed against Versailles and Coldwater Tuesday night in a double-dual format that also included Lehman. The Buccs wrestled very well in head-to-head match-ups, but were done in by forfeits in both contests, losing to Coldwater, 39-33, and Versailles, 49-25. With their 119 lb. wrestler, Bryton Lear, out until next week and their 215 lb. wrestler, Cody Burton, moving out of the district, Covington had to forfeit five weight classes – worth 30 team points to their opponents.
The Buccs won five of nine bouts wrestled against Versailles. Brock Smith (125) picked up a pin over Mitchell Bergman, followed by Kyler Deeter’s pin over Kyle Mangen at 130 lbs. Brandon Flora (135) won a 5-0 decision over Jordan Cavin, while Tyler Tebbe (140) picked up an 18-7 major decision over Joe Cain. Andrew DeHart won the final bout for Covington with a pin over Alec Grant at 145 lbs.
Dalton Bordelon (152) fell by pin to Versailles’ state placer Thomas Fullenkamp and A.J. Ouellette (160) dropped a 12-2 decision to Kaleb Matchett. Versailles’ state qualifier Joe Brandt earned a pin over Brian Olson at 171 lbs, while Justin Daniel dropped a 7-0 decision to Nick Francis at 189 lbs.
Versailles picked up forfeits by Wyatt Seibert (103), Andrew Slonkosky (112), Seth Davis (119), Devin Oliver (215) and Mitch Jokerst (285).
Covington then won six of nine matches wrestled against Coldwater. Picking up wins by pin were Kyler Deeter (130), Brandon Flora (135), Tyler Tebbe (140), Andrew DeHart (152) and Brian Olson (171), while Sam Angle (145) won a 6-2 decision. DeHart earned his 180th victory of his high school career, breaking the school record of 179 wins held by former state champion and current Purdue wrestler Logan Brown. Also competing well for the Buccs were Brock Smith (125), A.J. Ouellette (160) and Justin Daniel (189).
In JV action, D.J. Jennings (130), Sam Angle (140) and Jake Sowers (145) each picked up pins against Versailles, while Sowers earned an additional pin against Coldwater. Also competing for the Buccs were Alex Bitner (152), Dalton Bordelon (152), Gage Looker (160) and Cody Adams (189).
In Jr. High action, Covington wrestled against Versailles and Lehman. Cole Smith (142) went 2-0 with 2 pins, while Ian Fries (172) and Brandon Magee (160) both went 1-0 with 1 pin. Alex Schilling (110) also went 1-0, winning by decision. Ben Miller finished 1-1 on the night with 1 pin, while Matt Carder (104) and Chase Hinnegan (172) also competed well for the team.
Both the high school and jr. high teams compete in the Covington duals held on Saturday at Covington high school. Wrestling starts at 10 am.
