2011-12: OLSON, DEETER AND SOWERS PLACE AT LCC

After the first day of wrestling at the LCC Invitational, Covington sits in 19th place out of 37 teams. The Buccs advanced four of their eight competing wrestlers through the first two championship rounds and still have two more alive in the third consolation round.

Brock Smith (138) was the first wrestler to advance to the championship quarterfinals. Smith earned a pin over Cameron Hahn of Lima Catholic Central and a 9-5 decision over Cory Binkley of Spencerville.

Kyler Deeter (138) advanced through rounds one and two with consecutive pins over Jacob Bentle of Madeira and Garret Ward of Van Buren.

Jake Sowers (145) earned a 13-3 major decision over Brock Wilson of McComb and a pin over Graham Coghlan of Chanel, while Brian Olson (182) received a first-round bye followed by a pin over Chandler Brown of Chanel.

Both Cole Smith (152) and Ben Miller (160) advanced to the third consolation round after dropping round one bouts.

Smith dropped a 10-2 decision to the number one seed Max Erwin of Mechanicsburg, before reeling off a 12-2 major decision over Hunter Giesige of Columbus Grove and a
6-3 decision over New London’s Cole Reed.

Miller opened with an 8-4 setback against Seth Runyon of Blanchester before getting a 7-0 decision over Christian Sexton of Hicksville and a pin over Blake Lawson of Tri-County North.

The Covington high school wrestling team concluded the LCC Invitational in 16th place out of 37 teams with 3 individual place-winners.

Kyler Deeter (138) and Brian Olson (182) led the way for the Buccs with 3rd place finishes, while Jake Sowers (145) finished 6th.

Deeter started Saturday with a pin over Edgerton’s Sammy Santa-Rita, but dropped his semifinal bout, 12-11, to fellow state-placer Colt Lovejoy of Allen East. He then defeated Northridge’s Josh Lyttle, 16-6, and won by injury default over Evan Hansel of Newark Catholic in his final match.

Olson won his quarterfinal bout, 5-3, over Allen East’s Grant Criblez, but dropped a last-minute 8-4 decision to the top seed David Gremling of Lima Central Catholic in the semifinals. He then rebounded with consecutive pins over Brett Schwinnen of Delphos St. John’s and Tyler Shumate of Spencerville.

Sowers opened the day with a tight 5-4 quarterfinal loss to Jake Thiel of Hicksville, but rebounded in the consolations with a 6-4 victory over Jordan Jaso of Lakota. He then won a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Calvin Palmer of Patrick Henry before dropping his final two bouts – his last a 5-3 loss to Graham Couglan of Chanel.

Both Cole Smith (152) and Ben Miller (160) won their opening bouts on Saturday. Smith picked up a pin over Josh Bracy of Bluffton, while Miller battled to a 7-5 overtime decision over Preston Knecht of Edgerton. Each wrestler then dropped a decision in the fourth consolation round.

Brock Smith (132) lost his quarterfinal bout 11-1 to top seed Jared VanVleet then dropped his fourth consolation round bout to Alex Heldenbrand of Hillsdale.

The Covington reserve team competed at the Vandalia-Butler JV tournament on Saturday and came away with two placers. Jordan Wolfe (285) finished 2nd overall with a 3-1 record and Daniel Jennings (145) finished in 3rd place with a 4-1 record. Also competing for the Buccs were Dustin Freeman (132), Alex Fries (160) and Gage Looker (170).

Covington competes next against Versailles in a dual with the high school and jr. high on Thursday, Feb. 2.
