2012-13: BUCCS WIN FIRST SECTIONAL TITLE SINCE 1986

FEBRUARY 15, 2013 – SIDNEY
Covington had a strong first day at the Lehman Division 3 Sectional Tournament, advancing 10 of their 12 competing wrestlers into the semifinals, with the other two still alive in the consolation bracket. After the first three rounds, the Buccs are in first place out of 16 teams with 87.5 points, followed by Versailles and Mechanicsburg.

Connor Ryan (106) advanced with a bye and a 9-1 major decision over Drew Layne of Mechanicsburg, while Ryan Ford (126) had a bye and a 10-2 major decision over Miami East’s Stephen Morrow. Brock Smith (138) picked up two victories by pin – over Ian Smith of Lehman Catholic and Austin McCuistion of Miami East.

Daniel Jennings (145) advanced with an 11-9 decision over Miami East’s Mack Rose and a 19-1 technicall fall over Wes Morrow of Tri-County North, while Jake Sowers (152) picked up a bye and a pin over Caden Hellyer of Miami East

At 160 lbs, Kyler Deeter pinned Burke Stackey of Southeastern after getting a bye, while Ben Miller (170) received a bye before defeating Troy Christian’s Levi Sims, 6-4. A.J. Ouellette (182) pinned Scott Dooley after getting a bye in the first round, while Brian Olson (195) picked up a pair of pins, over Tristan Devlin of Troy Christian and Ely Stapleton of Mechanicsburg.

Jordan Wolfe (285) was the final Buccaneer to advance to the semifinals with a pin over Michael Knapp of Mechanicsburg.

Two additional wrestlers – Michael Cox (113) and Justin Daniel (220) – are still alive in the consolation bracket. Cox dropped a technical fall to Damon Walters of West Liberty-Salem, while Daniel dropped a close 4-3 decision to Drey Williams of Northeastern.

FEBRUARY 16, 2016 – SIDNEY
Covington entered the second day of the Lehman Division 3 Sectional wrestling tournament in first place with a narrow lead, and wrestled a fantastic second day, winning the 16-team tournament with 228.5 points, followed by runner-up Versailles (183) and Mechanicsburg (182). All twelve competing wrestlers won matches for the Buccs, while eleven placed in the top four to qualify for the District tournament. In doing so, Covington won their fourth overall sectional title and first since 1986. The team also tied the school record for most district qualifiers (11), which also occurred in 1986.

Three wrestlers led the way for Covington with first place finishes. Ryan Ford (126) won a convincing 13-5 major decision in the finals over Trevor Anderson of West Liberty-Salem after getting an 8-3 semifinal win over Andrew Zirkle of Triad. Daniel Jennings (145) picked up his fourth win of the tournament by pinning Adam Tilley of Mechanicsburg in the finals after a semifinal pin over Austin Moore of National Trail. Brian Olson (195) then picked up the Buccs’ final sectional title with a pin over Versailles’ Kyle Dieringer, after an injury default victory over Lehman’s Quinton Malone.

Five more wrestlers finished as sectional runners-up. Jake Sowers (152) won a 9-3 decision over Versailles’ Brandon Christian in the semifinals before dropping his final bout to Jordan Marshall of Troy Christian. Kyler Deeter (160) won 10-5 over Cameron Luther of Springfield Catholic Central in the semifinals before losing a come-from-behind match against Max Erwin of Mechanicsburg. Ben Miller (170) earned a semifinal pin over Matt Nieswinger of Springfield Catholic Central before losing to Zach Sullivan of National Trail in the finals.

A.J. Ouellette (182) picked up a strong 9-4 victory over the no. 2 seed Rickey Bruce of Triad in the semifinals before dropping his finals match to Troy Christian’s B.J. Toal. Jordan Wolfe (285) also finished as a sectional runner-up, earning a 3-1 semifinal victory over Chad Demaree of Southeastern, before losing his final bout to Versailles’ Andrew Smith.

Three additional wrestlers qualified to districts for Covington. Unseeded Justin Daniel (220) placed third by first defeating the no. 1 seed Andrew Smith of Versailles, 13-8, in the consolation semifinals, and then beating the no. 3 seed Drey Williams of Northeastern by pin for third place. Connor Ryan (106) pinned Izac Hernandez of Springfield Catholic Central in the consolation semifinals before dropping an overtime decision to Miami East’s Josh Morrow for fourth place.

Also taking fourth was Brock Smith (138) who earned a 5-3 consolation semifinal decision over Tri-County North’s Dustin Green before dropping a 2-1 decision to Anthony Decarlo of Springfield Catholic Central for fourth place. Michael Cox (113) also won and scored valuable points for the team. He concludes his freshman season with a 19-13 record.

The Buccs compete at the District tournament at Kettering Fairmont’s Trent Arena on Friday and Saturday, February 22-23.
