2013-14: BUCCS IMPROVE TO 16-0 IN DUALS

Covington extended their unbeaten dual meet streak in a competition featuring Miami County wrestling – picking up two victories to improve their record to 16-0 overall. The Buccs opened with a 71-6 victory over Miami East, before defeating Troy by a 51-21 score. Troy defeated Tippecanoe in round one, while Tippecanoe beat Miami East in the second round.

The Buccs got off to a strong start against the Vikings as A.J. Ouellette (195) picked up a pin over Dan Everett, followed by consecutive forfeits taken by Justin Daniel (220), Carl Lankford (285), Connor Ryan (106) and Coleman Ryan (113). Josh Sowers (120) then earned a 3-1 overtime decision over Miami East’s Aaron Adams, before Branden Robinson (126) earned a victory by pin over the Viking’s Trey Rush.

Covington continued with four more consecutive victories with Ryan Ford’s 19-4 technical fall over Matt Amheiser at 132 lbs, before pins by Lance Miller (138), Deron White (145) and Daniel Jennings (152) over Andy Harmon, Adam Bick and Austin McCuistion, respectively. Miami East would then get on the board with Mack Rose’s pin over Alex Fries (160).

The Buccs would pick up the final two victories by Brandon Magee (170) over Caden Hellyer, 5-2, and by Ben Miller (182) with a fall over Dalton Loughman, to close out the dual, 71-6.

The Buccs then opened their dual with Troy in the strength of the Trojan’s lineup, as Justin Daniel (220) and Carl Lankford (285) fell to Andrew Kostecka and Alex Dalton, respectively. Connor Ryan (106) would then score for the Buccs with a 6-2 decision over Shane Love, followed by a narrow back-and-forth 5-3 victory by Troy’s Kobe Scott over Coleman Ryan (113).

Covington’s Josh Sowers (120) then earned a pin over Ben Andrews, before Troy responded with a Mason Perkins’ pin over Branden Robinson (126) to give the Trojans a 21-9 lead. The Buccs would make a run of eight consecutive wins, however, for the 51-21 victory.

Ryan Ford (132) earned a 12-1 major decision over Eric Cannaday, while Lance Miller (138) pinned Ricky McVety. Deron White (145) earned a 16-1 technical fall over Harmon Singh, followed by a forfeit for Daniel Jennings (152). Alex Fries (160) then earned a 13-6 victory over Logan Etherington, before consecutive pins by Brandon Magee (170) and Ben Miller (182) over Devon Burke and Davin Snyder, respectively. A.J. Ouellette (195) would pick up a forfeit for the Buccs’ final victory.

In all, nine of the Covington’s fourteen competing wrestlers went 2-0, while the other five finished 1-1 at the meet. The Buccs reserve team travels to the Ben Logan Invitational on Saturday, while the varsity competes next at Coldwater in a meet with the Cavaliers and Troy Christian on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 6 pm.
