DECEMBER 18, 2013 – BROOKVILLE
The Covington High School wrestling team put in a strong effort against Brookville and Mechanicsburg on Tuesday, sweeping both teams to improve their overall dual meet record to 14-0. The Buccs opened with a 41-29 victory over a talented Mechanicsburg squad, followed by a 52-24 victory over Brookville.
Branden Robinson (126) got the Buccs rolling with a pin over Mechanicsburg’s district qualifier Sam Rozmus, followed by Ryan Ford’s technical fall over Corey Bogan at 132 lbs. The Indians would narrow the team score to 11-10 with a major decision by last year’s jr. high state champion Caleb Romero over Lance Miller (138) and a pin by district qualifier Joe Ziegler over Deron White (145).
The Buccs then won the next two bouts as Daniel Jennings (152) received a forfeit before Alex Fries (160) earned a pin over JT Schetter. Brandon Magee (170) then dropped his bout to state placer Austin Reece, before Ben Miller (182) responded with a pin over Eyan Stapleton. A.J. Ouellette (195) would follow suit with a decision over Jim Gano.
Covington then gained a sizeable lead, 41-16, with a victory by Justin Daniel (195) over Isaac Helmuth, and a pin by Jordan Wolfe (285) over Michael Knapp. The Indians would respond with victories by Alex Rhine over Connor Ryan (106), Drew Lane over Coleman Ryan (113) and a forfeit received by Nick Miller at 120 lbs. to conclude the dual.
The Buccs then put together a nice performance against the Blue Devils, getting off to a strong start and winning nine of the fourteen weights. Getting victories for Covington were Connor Ryan (106), Coleman Ryan (113, pin), Brandon Robinson (126), Ryan Ford (132, pin), Lance Miller (138, pin), Daniel Jennings (152), Brandon Magee (170, pin), Ben Miller (182, pin) and Jordan Wolfe (285). In JV action, Josh Sowers (126) picked up a pin and newcomer Logan Fields (152) earned the first victory of his wrestling career with a decision.
Covington’s Jr. High team also had a nice day, winning both duals in impressive fashion. The Buccs defeated Mechanicsburg, 43-9, then followed with a 51-17 victory over Brookville.
