Covington had a strong showing on Wednesday in preparation for next week’s OHSAA Regional Quarterfinals – sweeping both Troy Christian and Coldwater. The Buccs defeated Troy Christian, 57-18, and Coldwater, 46-19, to improve their dual meet record to 18-0 this season.
The Buccs opened with Troy Christian, as Justin Daniel (195) dropped a tight 5-4 decision to Brandon Swihart, before Ian Fries (220), Jordan Wolfe (285) and Connor Ryan (106) each picked up forfeits. Coleman Ryan (113) then fell to Troy Christian’s Michael Sergent, before the Buccs picked up forfeits by Josh Sowers (120), Branden Robinson (126) and Ryan Ford (132). Lance Miller (138) then dropped an exciting bout to Cody Ohnmeiss by decision.
Deron White (145) then wrestled a strong match against Caleb Hoskins, earning a pin for the Buccs, followed by a forfeit to Daniel Jennings (152). Troy Christian’s Scott Douglas then earned a pin over Logan Fields (160).
Covington’s Brandon Magee (170) then picked up a solid 8-1 victory over Levi Sims, before Ben Miller (182) earned a pin over Troy Christian’s Tristan Devlin to give the Buccs a 57-18 win.
In the second dual, Covington found themselves in an early back-and-forth battle with Coldwater before pulling away in the second half of the dual. Ian Fries (220) took state-ranked Justin Post to the wire, leading most of the match before falling at the end of the third period. Jordan Wolfe (285) then received a forfeit, before Connor Ryan (106) gave the Buccs a 10-6 lead with a 13-0 major decision over Andrew Miller.
Coldwater would regain the lead, 12-10, with close decisions by Jay Uhlenhake and Tyler Hemmelgarn over Coleman Ryan (113) and Josh Sowers (120), respectively. The dual would continue to seesaw as Covington’s Jared Ganger (126) picked up a 17-2 technical fall over Spencer Seibert, followed by Coldwater’s Tyler Tebbe earning a 7-2 decision over Branden Robinson (132), to knot the score 15-15.
The Buccs would then win six of the final seven bouts to roll to the 46-19 victory. Ryan Ford (138) earned an 11-2 major decision over Landon Schlater, followed by Lance Miller’s pin over Reece Kaiser at 145 lbs. Deron White (152) dropped a 15-7 decision to C.J. Seibert, before Daniel Jennings picked up a forfeit at 160 lbs.
Brandon Magee (170) then earned a solid 8-4 decision over Mitch Clune, followed by Ben Miller’s pin over Andrew Gillum at 182 lbs. Justin Daniel (220) won the Buccs’ final victory with a pin over Nick Clune to close out the dual.
Also competing in JV matches for the Buccs were Michael Cox (132), Ross Bowman (145) and Logan Fields (152).
Covington wrestles Milton-Union, Lehman and Arcanum at home on Monday, Jan. 20, at 5:30 pm, then hosts the opening rounds of the Regional quarterfinals at home on Wed, Jan. 22.
