2016-17: BUCCS START 2017 IN STYLE AT TROY & SIDNEY

Riley Richards and the Buccs performed well at Troy and Sidney recently.

Covington finished in 5th place overall out of 14 teams at the Troy Invitational on Saturday. The Buccs ended up with 8 placers at the event.

Keringten Martin (138) and Lance Miller (170) both finished as runners up. Martin fell to Miami East’s Alex Isbrandt in the finals after earning 4 victories including two pins. Miller dropped a 3-0 decision to Brett Vonderell of St. John’s after also picking up four victories with one pin.

Dolan Young (113) and Josh Sowers (145) both finished in 3rd place with 4-1 records. Young earned two pins while Sowers earned four.

Riley Richards (126, 2 pins) and Deron White (152, pin) finished in 4th place, while Bryce Keiser (220, 2 pins) finished 5th and Kyle Barga (120, 2 pins placed 6th.

Covington hosts Coldwater, Lima Bath and Milton-Union in a home meet on Thursday, January 19 at 6 pm.

Keringten Martin finished runner-up at Troy and went 2-0 at Sidney.

Covington put in a strong performance Wednesday night as they traveled to Sidney for a double dual and defeated the host Yellow Jackets, 57-15, followed by a 68-3 victory over Arcanum in their second dual.

Against Sidney, Kyle Barga (120) started the Buccs off with an 11-6 decision over Philip Bertsch, followed by Riley Richard’s (126) pin over Zachary Hicks. Austin Flick (132) then picked up a forfeit, before Keringten Martin (138) earned a pin over Kyler Pleasant.

Josh Sowers (145) then earned a 2-0 victory over Landon Johnson, followed by Deron White’s (152) 7-3 decision over Seth Wallace. Ross Bowman (160), Lance Miller (170) and Ian Wilson (182) kept things rolling for the Buccs with pins over Daniel Blosser, J.C. Voorhies and Mason Simindinger.

Sidney’s Jordan Marvin then picked up an overtime victory over Gavin McReynolds (195) and Joshua Walker pinned Bryce Keiser (220). The Buccs would win the final two bouts, though, as Carl Lankford (285) pinned Gregory Spencer and Dolan Young (106) picked up a forfeit before getting a come-from-behind 9-5 victory over Caleb Schroer. Parker Dysinger (145) then picked up pin over Landon Johnson.

The Buccs kept their momentum against Arcanum. After dropping their first bout by Kyle Barga (120) against Ethan Hoffman, 2-7, Covington reeled off 12 consecutive victories.

Riley Richards (126) and Austin Flick (132) pinned Aiden Erickson and Braydin Gillem, followed by Keringten Martin’s (138) 11-4 victory over Dylan Burns. Josh Sowers (145) then pinned Ethan Garbig, before Deron White (152) earned a 13-0 major decision over Matt Todd. This was followed by a forfeit received by Ross Bowman (160).

Lance Miller (170) pinned Dylan Rhodehamel, followed by forfeits to Ian Wilson (182) and Gavin McReynolds (195). Bryce Keiser (220) and Carl Lankford (285) then pinned Nolan Yeomans and Jayden Heltsley, before Dolan Young (106) picked up forfeit and an 6-2 exhibition victory over Kenton Ridge.

Josh Sowers finished third in the Troy Invitational.
