2018-19: BUCCS COME UP SHORT OF REACHING STATE DUALS

Covington advanced to the regional semi-finals on Saturday and dropped a tough 42–27 contest to eventual regional champion Versailles who went on to defeat Mechanicsburg in the finals. The Buccs won their first two duals of the tournament comfortably, beating West Liberty-Salem, 51–27, and Allen East, 40-34. In both of those duals, Covington had large leads and the victory sealed, so they forfeited four weights (24 points) at the end to keep kids fresh for later rounds. The Buccs are now 17-4 in duals this season.

Kellan Anderson (106), Cael Vanderhorst (113), Austin Flick (138), Keringten Martin (152), Dylan Burns (160), Gavin McReynolds (182) and Jesse Fisher (220) all went undefeated on the day for the Buccs.

Connor Sindelir (126) got things started against West Liberty-Salem, pinning Hayden Phillips, followed by a 12-5 victory by Riley Richards (132) over Austin VanHoose. Austin Flick (138) pinned Ian Maurice and Gavin McReynolds (182) pinned Maguire Stratton. Kellan Anderson (106), Cael Vanderhorst (113), Jensen Wagoner (145), Keringten Martin (152) and Dylan Burns (160) received forfeits.

The Buccs then built a 40-12 lead over Allen East to clinch victory before forfeiting the final 4 weights. Kellan Anderson (106) won by injury default over Jordan Kennedy, Cael Vanderhorst (113) pinned Ethan Garver, Connor Sindelir (126) pinned Dawson Redman, Keringten Martin (152) pinned Blake Hershberger and Dylan Burns (160) pinned Caleb Welch, before Duncan Cooper (170) picked up a 16-2 major decision over Ethan Boday. Austin Flick (138) picked up a forfeit for the Buccs.

Covington got off to a nice start against Versailles as Kellan Anderson (106) pinned Mike Reed and Cael Vanderhorst (120) pinned Noah Brown, while Kobe Epperly (113) picked up a forfeit for the Tigers. Versailles regained the lead with pins by Noah Barga (126) and Jacob Poling (132) over Connor Sindelir and Riley Richards.

Austin Flick (138) then picked up a win for the Buccs, 6-4, over Carson Bey, before Versailles’ Nick Monnier (145) and Dalton Didier (152) won 9-4 and by fall over Jensen Wagoner and Fletcher Metz. Keringten Martin (160) then pinned Cael Bey, before Versailles’ Tyler Gigandet (170) beat Duncan Cooper, 9-2.

Covington’s Gavin McReynolds (182) then won a come-from-behind victory over Noah Gilmore, 5-3, before Versailles’ Isaac Grilliot (195) pinned Ricky Stephan. Jesse Fisher (220) then won a 4-2 overtime decision for the Buccs over Brayden Keihl, before Versailles’ Austin Nerderman pinned Scott Blumenstock.

Covington travels to Eaton for a combined high school and jr. high dual on Tuesday, February 5, followed by a double dual at Wayne with Trotwood-Madison on Wednesday, February 6.
