Northeastern Invitational – Day 1

The Covington High School wrestling team had a strong start at the 10-team Northeastern dual-meet wrestling tournament, going 4-0 on the evening. The Buccs faced their toughest foe of the day in the opening round, edging Carlisle, 41-35. Picking up wins for the Buccs were Bryton Lear (119), D.J. Jennings (130), Kyler Deeter (135, pin), Tyler Tebbe (140), Sam Angle (145), Jake Sowers (152), Andrew DeHart (160, pin) and Brian Olson (189).
Covington then stormed to a 51-6 victory over West Liberty-Salem. Winning for Covington were Bryton Lear (119), Brock Smith (125, pin), Kyler Deeter (130), D.J. Jennings (135), Tyler Tebbe (140), Sam Angle (145), Jake Sowers (152), Andrew DeHart (160), Brian Olson (189) and Cody Burton (215). During the dual, Deeter battled to an exciting 12-11 victory over returning state qualifier Brit Wooten.
In the third round the Buccs defeated Tipp City, 51-18. Earning wins were Bryton Lear (119), Brock Smith (125, pin), D.J. Jennings (130), Kyler Deeter (135), Sam Angle (140, pin), Tyler Tebbe (145, pin), Jake Sowers (152), Andrew DeHart (160) and A.J. Ouellette (171).
Covington concluded the day with a 54-18 victory over Triad. Picking up wins were Bryton Lear (119), Brock Smith (125), Kyler Deeter (130, pin), D.J. Jennings (135), Tyler Tebbe (140, pin), Sam Angle (145), Jake Sowers (152), Andrew DeHart (160, pin), A.J. Ouellette (171, pin) and Brian Olson (189, pin).
Going 4-0 through the first four rounds were Bryton Lear, D.J. Jennings, Kyler Deeter, Tyler Tebbe, Sam Angle, Jake Sowers and Andrew DeHart.
On Saturday, Covington faces Northeastern, Springfield, Fairborn, Urbana and Northwestern.
Northeastern Invitational – Day 2

Covington finished the second day of wrestling at the ten-team Northeastern Invitational with 4 wins and one loss for an 8-1 overall record to finish as tournament runners-up. The Buccs fell short in their quest for a third consecutive team title, dropping their opening dual on Saturday to eventual champions Northeastern, 39-30. Covington rebounded nicely, however, with a 48-16 win over Springfield and a 60-9 victory over Fairborn – where the Buccs reeled off ten consecutive pins. The squad then picked up a 50-33 victory over Urbana and concluded with a 63-0 shutout of Northwestern.
Four of Covington’s wrestlers won championships in their respective weight classes. At 130 lbs, Kyler Deeter went 9-0 with 5 pins, 1 technical fall and a key win over a returning state qualifier. Sam Angle (130) also finished with a 9-0 record – earning 4 pins at the tourney. At 140 lbs, Tyler Tebbe (9-0) picked up 6 pins en route to his gold medal, while teammate Andrew DeHart (152, 9-0) also earned 6 pins on the day. DeHart also hit a rare milestone in wrestling – picking up his 150th career win on Saturday.
At 145 lbs, Jake Sowers fell one point short of winning the tournament, finishing as a runner-up with an 8-1 record with 2 pins. Taking third for Covington were Bryton Lear (119, 7-2, 1 pin) and Brock Smith (125, 7-2, 5 pins). At 189 lbs, Brian Olson placed fourth with a 6-3 record and 2 pins.
Also competing and winning matches for Covington were D.J. Jennings (130, 5-0, 1 pin), Dalton Bordelon (152, 3-1, 2 pins), A.J. Ouellette (171, 5-4, 2 pins) and Cody Burton (215, 3 wins).
Covington’s reserve team also wrestled at the tournament where they picked up some wins against the varsity wrestlers. Wrestling for the reserve team were Alex Fries (140), Alex Bitner (145), Gage Looker (160), Cody Adams (189) and Justin Daniel (189).
Covington travels to Mechanicsburg on Tuesday to face the defending sectional champions in a dual starting at 6 pm on Tue, Dec. 14.
