2019-20: BUCCS SWEEP HOME DUALS

Cael Vanderhorst went undefeated during the Covington Duals.

FEBRUARY 22, 2020 – COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers swept the Covington Duals to finish the regular season in style on Saturday.

Covington opened up the tournament with a 66-12 win over Arcanum – winning three of the five matches wrestled. Deacon Shields (152) pinned Arcanum’s Tyler Pfahler, while Trentin Alexander (170) defeated Cael Gostomsky 8-2 and Jesse Fisher downed Dylan Rhodehamel 8-5.

The Buccaneers followed with a 72-14 win over National Trail with Dalton Bishop (106), Deacon Shields (152), Jensen Wagoner (160) and Trentin Alexander (170) picking up pins.

A 58-13 victory over Tri-County North as Dalton Bishop (106) and Jesse Fisher (195) recored falls, while Connor Sindelir (138) captured bonus points with a 10-0 major decision.

Covington then recorded an 84-0 shutout victory over Lehman as the Buccaneers won all six matches wrestled by pin and received seven forfeits. Winning their bouts were Brian Morrison (113), Cael Vanderhorst (120), Deacon Shields (152), Jensen Wagoner (160), Trentin Alexander (170), and Bryce Smith (183).

This set up a showdown with Miami East in a rubber match between the two programs. Earlier in the year Covington defeated the Vikings 48-24, but Miami East turned the tables on the Buccs with a 36-27 win last weekend in the OHSAA Duals.

And just like the previous two meetings, the dual was an exciting back-and-forth affair. Covington won the dual 45-33, but was the benefactor of four forfeits as Miami East won six of the ten matches wrestled.

Winning by pin for Covington was Deacon Shields (152), Jensen Wagoner (160) and Dylan Staudt (220). Cael Vanderhorst had the biggest win of the day, however, as he defeated returning state placer Max Shore by the score of 8-3 in a 126 pound thriller.

Shore took a 2-0 lead with an early takedown, but and escape and a takedown by Vanderhorst gave the Buccaneer a 3-2 lead. Shore as able to escape to tie the score at 3-3.

Late in the third period Vanderhorst was able to surprise Shore with a takedown straight to the back for a five-point move. The Buccaneer grappler then held on as the final second ticked away.

The five wins on Saturday concludes Covington’s dual meet record at 25-4. The Buccs now look forward to the sectional tournament next Friday and Saturday at Covington High School.
