Andrew DeHart

Tuesday, December 28, 2010
The Covington high school wrestling team had a rough first day at the GMVWA Holiday wrestling tournament held at Wright State University’s Nutter Center, finishing the day with 23 points for 42nd place out of the 49 teams competing. The Buccs sent a partial squad of seven wrestlers to the tournament, but only six were able to compete as one of Covington’s two seeded wrestlers – Kyler Deeter (130 lbs, no. 3 seed) – was unable to participate due to a skin condition.

Two wrestlers advanced to the second day of the competition for the Buccs. At 152 lbs, Andrew DeHart won his opening round match with a first period pin over Steven Gohrband of Troy. He then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-1 decision over Northwestern’s Mason Sherrock.

At 171 lbs, Brian Olson started off in impressive fashion with a first period pin over Bradie Strawser of Van Wert in a championship rat-tail bout. He then won a solid 5-1 decision over Pickerington Central’s Wesson Hunter.

In his next bout – with the no. 6 seed Jeremy Chandler of Lima Bath – Olson nearly advanced to the quarterfinals as he was winning 7-4 and had the Lima wrestler on his back, before getting rolled and pinned. Brian rebounded nicely, however, with an impressive 6-3 victory over Oakwood’s Dan Pohlman – a wrestler who had defeated Olson 8-2 at the beginning of the season. Brian wrestles tomorrow in the third consolation round.

Dropping their second round consolation bouts were Sam Angle (145) and Tyler Tebbe (140). Angle finished 2-2, dropping his opening round bout before rebounding with a 2-1 victory over Ben Wahl of Indian Lake and a 10-6 decision over Guillebaldo Cepeda of Fairborn, and dropping his final bout to Shane Helsinger of Eaton.

Tebbe won his first round match with a second period pin over the no. 8 seed Devin Whorle of Hilliard Bradley and was leading his next opponent before falling to Bellbrook’s Nick Shank. He then dropped his final bout to Vandalia-Butler’s Jake Parsons.

Also competing for the Buccs were Brock Smith (125) and Brandon Flora (135).

Wrestling resumes Wednesday morning at 11 am and the finals are slated for approximately 5 pm.
