Covington advanced through the first two rounds of the OHSAA Dual Meet Regional tournament on Wednesday, as they hosted Greeneview, Miami East and Troy Christian. In the opening round, the Buccs defeated Greeneview, 66-15, while Troy Christian beat Miami East, 57-21. Covington then prevailed over Troy Christian in the final round of the night, 32-30.

Troy Christian’s Jacob Edwards (106) earned the first win in the final round over Connor Ryan, 5-4. Jared Ford (113) then gave the Buccs a 4-3 lead with a 14-4 major decision over Drew Whaley. Michael Sergent (120) picked up a 22-8 major decision over Coleman Ryan to return the lead to the Eagles, 7-4. Troy Christian would extend their lead, 13-4, as Garret Hancock received a forfeit at 126 lbs.

Covington’s Jarred Ganger (132) received a forfeit before Cody Ohnmeiss (138) earned a 21-6 technical fall victory over Joey Schmelzer to give the Eagles an 18-10 lead. The Buccs would then reel off three consecutive victories to regain the lead, 23-18. Ryan Ford (145) defeated Seth Bell, 5-2, Deron White (152) earned a 13-4 major decision over Caleb Hoskins, and Lance Miller (160) pinned Canaan Berry during their streak. Troy Christian’s Damon Beatty (170) edged Gage DeHart, 3-2, to cut into Covington’s lead, 23-21.

Brandon Magee (182) picked up a big victory for the Buccs with a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over Levi Sims. Ben Miller (195) then gave Covington an 11-point lead, 32-21, by pinning Tristan Devlin. Troy Christian would win the final two bouts as Brandon Swihart (220) pinned Seth Thomas and Seth Douglas (285) decisioned Ian Fries, 6-4. The Buccs held on for the 32-30 victory.

In the opening round, four Buccaneer wrestlers earned pins against Greeneview, including Ryan Ford (138) over Lance Goodbar, Lance Miller (152) over Adam Bramble, Bo Swank (182) over Austin Roberts and Ben Miller (195) over Collin Matt. Miller’s win was his 150th of his high school career.

Connor Ryan (106), Jared Ford (113), Coleman Ryan (120), Levi Winn (126), Jarred Ganger (132), Deron White (145) and Brandon Magee (170) each received forfeits, helping the Buccs to their 66-15 win.

Covington will compete in the Regional Semifinals versus Versailles on Wednesday, February 4. In the meantime, the team travels to the 40-team Lima Central Catholic (LCC) Invitational on Friday and Saturday, January 30-31.
