2018-19: LIMITED BUCCS STILL TAKE SECOND

Cael Vanderhorst locks up a pin.

DECEMBER 15, 2018 – VERSAILLES
Covington’s high school wrestling team battled through adversity Saturday at the Versailles Invitational and came away with a 2nd place finish out of 9 teams at the event to improve their dual meet record to 11-2. The Buccs fielded a squad that was missing six starters, and had to forfeit a number of weight classes, but the team’s backups came up big to secure a number of team victories.

After an opening round bye, Covington faced a solid Brookville team and battled to a 42-30 win. The team then squared off with a nice St. Mary’s squad, winning a close 43-36 victory and avenging a loss from last season. The Buccs then defeated 5th place Arcanum, 69-3, before dropping their finals dual to Versailles, 52-22.

Going undefeated were Kellan Anderson (106, 3 pins), Cael Vanderhorst (113, 3 pins), Austin Flick (138, 4 pins) and Keringten Martin (160, pin). Finishing 3-1 for the Buccs were Jensen Wagoner (152) and Gavin McReynolds (182, 2 pins). Also winning matches for the Buccs were Devin Newhouse (106), Riley Richards (132), Fletcher Metz (145, pin), Ricky Stephan (195, 2 pins), Trentin Alexander (170, pin), Jesse Fisher (220) and Dylan Staudt (285).

Covington’s high school and jr. high teams travel to Miami East this Wed., Dec. 19, for a dual meet. Wrestling starts at 5:30 pm.

Austin Flick earned four pins at Versailles on Saturday.
Kellan Anderson went unbeaten at 106 pounds for Covington.
Due to the Buccs having 6 wrestlers out of the lineup, Keringten Martin bumped up to 160 pounds and finished unbeaten at the Versailles Invitational.
