2020-21: BUCCS SWEEP WAYNE TRACE AND CELINA

Cael Vanderhorst and the Buccs improved their dual record to 22-2.

Covington took a long trip to Wayne Trace to face the host Raiders plus Celina in a tri meet on Tuesday night. The Buccs came away winners in both duals to improve their season record to 22-2. Covington defeated Celina, 54-21, before beating Wayne Trace, 48-24.

Against Celina, the Buccs picked up the first three victories as Carson Taylor (106) earned a forfeit, followed by Michael Hagan’s (113) pin over Andrew Hines, and Jericho Quinter’s (120) 5-2 victory over Derrick Slater. Kellan Anderson (126) then dropped a 4-0 decision to Landon Engle in a battle of state-ranked wrestlers before Jackson Shiverdecker (132) pinned Grant Grieshop and Cael Vanderhorst (138) pinned Mitch Kirkpatrick. Celina’s Carver Harris responded with a pin over Luke Brown (145).

Connor Sindelir (152) kept things going for Covington with a pin over Carson Keiser, before Celina picked up win as Trey Kiser (160) fell to Zander Jones. Trentin Alexander (170) and Jensen Wagoner (182) then picked up a pair of pins over Tim Novitzke and Josh Sweeney, respectively. Celina’s Braydon Mullins followed with a forfeit at 195 lbs., before Hayden Barker (220) won an 8-1 decision over Brad Pennington and Scott Blumenstock (285) picked up an 18 second pin over Keene Rinderle.

Covington’s dual with Wayne Trace featured a number of state ranked kids, including the first three matches wrestled. Kellan Anderson (126) faced his second ranked wrestler of the evening in Gabe Sutton and came away with a strong 13-2 major decision. Jackson Shiverdecker (132) then fell to Jarrett Hornish, before Cael Vanderhorst (138) won a 4-1 decision in an exciting match with Hunter Long in a battle of top-five ranked wrestlers.

Luke Brown (145) then fell to Wayne Trace’s Seth Meggison, before Connor Sindelir (152) picked up a 10-0 victory over Samual Moore. After Wayne Trace’s Eli Moore (160) picked up a forfeit, the Buccs reeled off four straight victories. Trey Kiser (170) won an 8-6 decision over Elliot Boroff, followed by Trentin Alexander (182) pinning Parker Schisler. Jensen Wagoner (195) then pinned Nathan Osborn before Ricky Stephan (220) got a pin over Kaden Woolbright.

The team traded the next two bouts, as Scott Blumenstock (285) had to injury default his match to Jacob Graham, followed by Carson Taylor (106) battling to a 13-3 major decision over Conner Blankenship. Michael Hagan (113) and Jericho Quinter (120) picked up forfeits for the Buccs.

Covington high school hosts Tippecanoe on Thursday, January 14, at 6 pm.

In Jr. High action, Covington split their duals, defeating Wayne Trace and losing to Celina. Winning for Covington were Colt Williams (86 lbs, 1-1), Caleb Ryman (92, 2-0, pin), Kacyn Hall (98, 2-0, 2 pins), Elijah Carnes (110, 1-1, pin), Jack Blumenstock (128, 1-0, pin), Justin Hall(128, 1-0), AJ Garman (142, 1-0, pin), Mason Epperson (142, 1-0), Chase Willis (150, 2-0), Ashtin Gardner (205, 1-1) and Forest Arthur (245, 1-1). Also wrestling well for Covington were Rowan Isaacs (104) and Zane Lemp (160).
