Two seniors and a sophomore claimed individual championships, leading the Covington wrestling team to a 3rd place finish at the eleven-team Lincolnview Invitational. The Buccs came very close to winning the tournament, despite having two varsity wrestlers out of the lineup, scoring 180.5 points to team champion Spencerville’s 195. Covington advanced eight of their twelve varsity wrestlers into the placement matches and found themselves in sixth place heading into the finals. In the last session, the Buccs managed to win all eight placement matches to move up three places in the final team standings.
At 112 lbs, senior Jordan Tebbe won his second consecutive tournament, going 4-0 with 4 pins. Tebbe gave up the first takedown in his championship match with John Goyne of Wayne Trace, but quickly escaped, then scored a takedown of his own and pinned Goyne in a cradle in the first period.
Sophomore Logan Hall, coming off a broken wrist that occurred pre-season, won the 145 lb championship in his first varsity action of the season. Hall went 5-0 on the day and advanced to finals with 4 pins where he faced Jarred Hagen of Ayersville. Hall scored the first takedown and led throughout, winning a tight 9-7 decision for first place.
Senior Logan Brown followed up Hall’s victory with a dominating performance to win the 189 lb championship. Brown went 5-0 on the day, earning 4 pins in the early rounds before defeating Trevor Wilson of Wayne Trace in the finals by a 16-5 major decision. With Wilson in defensive mode, trying to avoid giving up the pin, Brown went to his feet taking his opponent down multiple times for the win.
Taking third for the Buccs were Jake Jennings (119 lbs), Justin McMillion (140 lbs) and Bobby Wiltshire (152 lbs). Jennings went 3-1 on the day with 3 pins. In his final bout, Jake found himself trailing Ryan Jacob of Fairview, 7-2, but fought back to take a 15-12 lead before pinning his opponent in the third period. McMillion went 4-1 on the day with 3 pins, defeating Chris Combs of Ayersville for third place with a sound 6-2 decision. Wiltshire also went 4-1, earning 2 pins in the early rounds before finishing with a dominating 17-0 technical fall victory over Ethan Enyert of Van Wert in the finals.
