2012-13: VERSAILLES ENDS BUCCS HOPES IN OHSAA DUALS

Kyler Deeter works to turn his opponent during the OHSAA Duals.

JANUARY 30, 2013 – VERSAILLES
Covington split their duals Wednesday night during the OHSAA Regional Dual Meet Semifinals.

Four teams – Covington, Mechanicsburg, Troy Christian and Versailles – advanced to this two-round event, where the winners of round one squared off in round two to determine who advances in the tournament.

The Buccs – seeded no. 2 in the overall regional bracket – opened with a come-from-behind 52-27 victory over no. 3 seed Mechanicsburg, while top seed Versailles defeated Troy Christian. Covington then dropped the final dual to Versailles, 48-18.

Against Mechanicsburg, the Buccs reeled off seven straight victories at the end of the dual to turn a 17-point deficit into a 25-point victory.

The Buccs then dropped a number of close decisions early against Versailles, which forced them to bump a number of wrestlers up a weight class in order to go for the win instead of keeping the dual close. The Tigers were sharper overall tonight though and came away with the victory.

Ryan Ford (126), Jake Sowers (152), Kyler Deeter (160) and Brian Olson (195) each went 2-0 for Covington. Ford earned a major decision and a solid victory over a state alternate, while Sowers earned a pin and a win over a district placer. Deeter and Olson were both dominant with a pair of pins each.

Also winning matches tonight for Covington were Connor Ryan (106, 1 pin), Ben Miller (170, 1 pin), A.J. Ouellette (182, 1 pin), Ian Fries (195, 1 pin) and Jordan Wolfe (285, 1 pin). The Buccs overall dual meet record now stands at 19-3. Covington competes next at home in the Covington Duals Invitational on Saturday, January 9 at 10 am.

Brian Olson bumped up in weight against Mechanicsburg and Versailles and still managed to record two pins.
