The Covington High School wrestling team continued their strong dual meet performance by winning a quad with Troy, Tippecanoe and Miami East on Thursday. In the first round, the Buccs defeated Tipp City, 52-23, while Miami East defeated Troy. Covington then beat Miami East in the final round, 54-23, to extend their record to 14-1 this season.
A.J. Ouellette (182 lbs) got things started for the Buccs with a 14-5 major decision over Tipp’s district qualifier Shane Dodd. Justin Daniel (195) and Brian Olson (220) each picked up forfeits before Jordan Wolfe (285) dropped a 6-2 decision to Logan Ferrell.
Covington’s Connor Ryan (106) earned a pin over Garon Cruz before Tipp answered with a technical fall by Eric Seeman over Michael Cox (113). Tipp’s Mitchell Poynter (120) and Joseph Flora (126) picked up forfeits, followed by Ryan Ford (132) picking up a forfeit for Covington. Brock Smith (138) then dropped a close 7-4 decision to Jack Peora.
The Buccs would then take the next four bouts as Daniel Jennings (145) picked up a forfeit, followed by a Jake Sower’s (152) pin over Logan Lafferty. Kyler Deeter (160) then pinned Cameron Gibbs before Ben Miller (170) concluded the dual with a pin over Billy Martin.
Against Miami East, Brian Olson (195) picked up the first win for Covington with a pin over Dalton Laughman. Justin Daniel (220) and Jordan Wolfe (220) each earned forfeits before Connor Ryan (106) dropped a tight match, 4-2, to Josh Morrow. The Vikings picked up the next three wins with a pin by Mathew Amheiser over Michael Cox (113), and forfeits to Allen Seagraves (120) and Stephen Morrow (126).
Ryan Ford (132) got things rolling again with a 15-6 victory over Austin Rush, as Covington would claim the next seven victories. Senior Brock Smith then claimed the 100th victory of his career with a pin over Adam Bick at 138 lbs. Daniel Jennings (145) then won a 10-7 decision over Mack Rose, before Jake Sowers (152) pinned Caden Hellyer.
Kyler Deeter (160) picked up a pin over Dan O’Malley, followed by Ben Miller’s (170) pin over Aaron Hubbard. A.J. Ouellette then concluded the dual with a 17-2 technical fall victory over Daniel Everett.
Covington competes next at home on Thursday, Jan. 17, in a quad where they host Coldwater, Northridge and Lehman. The meet starts at 6 pm.
