OHIO NORTHERN – Chase Vanderhorst, a 2024 Covington graduate, just closed out an outstanding sophomore wrestling season at Ohio Northern University by finishing fourth place in the NCAA III Regional IV Championships.
Chase finished up his sophomore season with an impressive 17-4 record with 8 pins, 2 tech falls and 3 major decisions and now has a career record of 37-18 with 13 pins, 9 tech falls and 6 major decisions.
In his 133 pound weight class, Chase Vanderhost started off the tournament with an impressive 2:07 pin over Avan Rosado from Bethany College, His pin came after building a 9-2 lead.
Chase then followed up by defeating Nolan Frye from Mount Union with an 8-1 decision victory. This was an impressive victory against the same wrestler who defeated Vanderhorst last season due to an unfortunate injury that led to a surgery he had to overcome in preparation of his sophomore season.
In the semifinal match, Chase was within contention to qualify for nationals, but he came up short in a close 2-0 loss to Vincent Ziccardi from Washington & Lee. Fortunately, Chase followed up with a gritty 3-2 victory over AJ Orlando from Averett, Virginia to put himself in contention for third place.
Despite battling unfortunate injuries, Chase wrestled very tough throughout his sophomore season. Unfortunately, he came up just one victory short for advancing to the National Championships as he dropped his final match to Chase Creque from Baldwin Wallace.
Still, Chase Vanderhorst has two more seasons available for him at Ohio Northern University and the hard work and determination he puts in will hopefully lead to more future success.
