BUCCS FINISH FIFTH AT TROY INVITATIONAL

Liam Geeding finished fourth in his weight class to help the Buccs finish fifth in the Troy Invitational.

Covington’s wrestling team put in a solid performance at the Troy Invitational on Saturday, finishing in 5th place out of 18 teams.  Eight of the Buccs’ eleven competing wrestlers placed in the top-6 at the tournament.

Caleb Ryman (157 lbs.) and Trenton Havenar (215) led the way for Covington with first place finishes.  Ryman earned his second consecutive Troy Invitational title with a pin over Delphos St. John’s Riley Mueller in the finals.  It was Ryman’s fifth pin of the day.  Havenar won an overtime decision over Troy’s Carson Reichelderfer in the finals, posting a 5-0 record with 3 pins.

Jonny Miller (132) came into the tournament unseeded but knocked off two seeded wrestlers on his way to a 4-1 finish to place 3rd overall.  Brody Taylor (113) and Liam Geeding (144) both finished in 4th place.  After winning his first two bouts, Taylor had to injury default in the semifinals and forfeited his final match, while Geeding earned 2 pins on his way to the podium.

Weston Roth (138) finished with a 4-1 overall record take 5th place, earning 3 pins on the day, while Eddie Deaton (120) and Landon Beeman (175, 2 pins) both took 6th place.

Also winning matches for Covington were Gavin Brown (144, 2 pins), Cooper Turner (144, 1 pin), Tyler Palsgrove (150, 1 pin), Gibson Leach (175, 1 pin) and Day’Lynn Garrett (165, 1 pin) and A.J. Reyes (190, 1 pin).

The Buccs compete next at the Vandalia-Butler JV Pools on Thursday, Jan. 8, and the Urbana Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 10.

Caleb Ryman won the 157 pound weight class.
