URBANA – Covington put in an outstanding team effort at the Mike Agerter Memorial Invitational in Urbana on Saturday, finishing in 1st place out of 15 schools. Kettering Fairmont, Tipp City, Caledonia River Valley and Lakewood rounded out the top five teams. Despite having a few wrestlers missing, the Buccs ended up placing 5 of their 10 competing varsity wrestlers in the top-2, with 4 wrestlers coming home as champions. All ten varsity wrestlers won matches and scored points for the team, while two extra wrestlers that got into the tournament also won matches.
Henry Skaggs (126 lbs.) won the first title for Covington. After earning 3 pins, he advanced to the finals to face Karson Jenkins of Caledonia River Valley – the number 3 ranked wrestler in the state for Division 2 at 120 lbs. After getting taken down, Skaggs frustrated Jenkins with his defense throughout the match, causing Jenkins to lose his cool and commit a number of penalties, ultimately getting disqualified and giving Skaggs the victory.
Liam Geeding (150 lbs.) earned the second title for the Buccs in convincing fashion, going 4-0, with 3 pins and a technical fall, and getting his last pin in the first period of the championship match over Kaleb Miracle of Caledonia River Valley.
Caleb Ryman (157 lbs.) continued his outstanding season winning the title with a 16-3 major decision victory over Dixie’s Nathan Metcalf. Ryman advanced to the finals with 2 pins and a technical fall victory. Caleb was also honored and awarded the Mike Agerter Memorial Senior wrestling scholarship at the tournament.
Trenton Havenar (215 lbs.) won the tournament with a convincing 13-1 major decision over returning state qualifier Brody Adams of Springfield Catholic Central. Havenar advanced to the finals with three consecutive pins.
Weston Roth (138) finished in 2nd place, dropping a decision to Belmont’s John Riley. Roth finished 4-1 on the day with 3 pins and a victory by decision in the semifinals.
Eddie Deaton (120) finished 2-2 with 2 pins, while Grayson Feight (144) went 2-1 with 2 pins with his only loss coming to the tournament runner-up. Jonny Miller (132), Wyatt Kerber (132) and Diego Lopez (165) each went 1-2 with 1 pin, but their only losses were to the tournament champion and runner-up.
