Covington is coming off an excellent season, finishing with a 25-4 dual meet record, winning the Northeastern Invitational and the Covington Duals and advancing to the Regional Semi-Finals. The team also finished with a 133-30 tournament record, placing 3rd out of 14 teams at the Troy Invitational, 14th out of 49 teams at the prestigious GMVWA Holiday wrestling tournament and 5th out of 41 teams at the Lima Central Catholic Invitational where the team set a new school record with nine individual placers.

The Buccs placed 3rd out of 13 teams at Sectionals, with 8 district qualifiers (Cael Vanderhorst, Kellan Anderson, Connor Sindelir, Jensen Wagoner, Trentin Alexander, Bryce Smith, Dylan Staudt and Scott Blumenstock,), and 10th out of 51 teams at Districts, qualifying two wrestlers to State – Cael Vanderhorst and Kellan Anderson, while Trentin Alexander finished as a district placer. Unfortunately, the State tournament was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, cutting Cael and Kellan’s seasons short, and eliminating their opportunity to return to the podium for the Buccs. Cael and Kellan both finished as 3-time state qualifiers – just Covington’s fourth and fifth overall. Covington has had one or more state placers for twelve consecutive state tournaments and fourteen of the past fifteen state tournaments.

The Buccs lost three strong seniors to graduation – state alternate Austin Flick and district qualifiers Jesse Fisher and Dylan Staudt, but return a number of talented wrestlers. Covington will be led by seniors Trentin Alexander, Kellan Anderson, Duncan Cooper, David Robinson and Cael Vanderhorst. Anderson and Vanderhorst are returning state placers, while Alexander is a returning district placer, Cooper is a returning district qualifier and Robinson is a district alternate.

The junior class includes Scott Blumenstock, Caleb Miller, Connor Sindelir, Ricky Stephan and Jensen Wagoner. Blumenstock, Sindelir and Wagoner are returning district qualifiers, while Miller is a district alternate and Stephan is a returning letterman.

The sophomore class includes Trey Kiser and Corey Turner. Rounding out the roster are freshmen Hayden Barker, Luke Brown, Michael Hagan, Kamden Hughes, Jericho Quinter, Megan Rose, Jackson Shiverdecker, Carson Taylor and Chase Vanderhorst.

Covington looks forward to competing with the mix of Division 1, 2 and 3 teams that are on their schedule. The coronavirus pandemic has shut down some of the larger tournaments the Buccs usually attend, like the GMVWA Holiday tournament as well as the OHSAA Duals, but the team hopes the Lima Central Catholic (LCC) Invitational will still take place. They will also compete in the Northeastern, Versailles and Troy Invitationals. Covington will once again square off with some of the top dual-meet teams in the western part of the state, including Versailles, Miami East, Coldwater, Allen East and Eaton. Additionally, the JV team will travel to some very competitive reserve meets including Versailles and Vandalia-Butler.

Covington currently has three home duals and will once again host the Covington Duals tournament – which includes their Cross County Conference rivals, along with Lehman. The Buccs will then host the Division 3 sectional tournament – whose participants have proven to be among the most successful among all divisions in Ohio at the state tournament several times over the past decade.

BUCCS EARN THREE MEDALS AT STATE

For the first time since 2015, the Covington wrestling program produced three state medals as Cael Vanderhorst finished fourth while Kellan Anderson and Michael Hagan both finished eighth. Senior Trentin Alexander also competed at the state meet.
