2009-10: Buccs Get Wins Over Mechanicsburg and Lehman

The Covington High School wrestling team continued their winning ways during a tri meet with Mechanicsburg and Lehman. The Buccs earned a solid victory over the Mechanicsburg Indians, 48-34, before besting Lehman, 66-12, to improve their overall dual meet record to 12-0.

Matt Breisch – who would earn the 100th victory of his career during the evening – got things rolling for Covington with a second-period pin over T.J. Floyd at 119 lbs. The Indians would answer at 125 lbs, as Austin Black bested Jake Sowers, 11-3, to narrow the team score to 6-4. With that 2-point lead, the Buccs then secured the victory over Mechanicsburg by putting together a string of six straight victories to take a 42-4 lead.

Sam Angle (130) struck first with a pin over Caleb Anderson of Mechanicsburg, followed by Kyler Deeter’s pin over Danny Ward at 135 lbs. Tyler Tebbe (140) kept things going by pinning Brattynn Thompson in the first period. Dylan Gustin (145) then picked up a forfeit for the Buccs, before Andrew DeHart (152) earned another Covington fall – over Jakob Shipp.

Senior Josh McMillion would then secure the victory by pinning previously undefeated Max Erwin at 160 lbs. The Indians would then go on a run of their own as state-placer Cody Rodgers pinned Covington’s Brian Olson (171) followed by district-placer Ty Wasserman’s pin over Josh Shefbuch (189). Mechanicsburg would pick up two more victories as state-placer Josh Salyers (215) and Evan Elliot (285) both earned forfeits to narrow the Buccs’ lead to 42-28.

Covington’s Brock Smith (103) picked up another win for the Buccs at 103 lbs, before Mechanicsburg’s Adam Tilley earned the final win of the dual in a back-and-forth match over Bryton Lear (112).

In the dual with Lehman, Covington’s Jake Sowers (125) got things started with a pin over Riley Pickrel. Sam Angle (130) and Kyler Deeter (135) would then earn forfeits before Covington’s Dylan Gustin (140) picked up another pin for the Buccs over Kane Pickrel. Covington’s Tyler Tebbe (145), Andrew DeHart (152) and Josh McMillion (160) each received a forfeit, followed by Brian Olson’s pin over Lehman’s Quinton Malone at 171 lbs.

Lehman would then earn the next two victories as Ryan Jacob (189) earned a pin over Josh Shefbuch, and Matt Pulfer picked up a forfeit at 215 lbs. Covington picked up the last two victories with Brock Smith’s pin over Justin Pleasant (103) and Bryton Lear earning a forfeit at 112 lbs.

In Jr. High action, Covington defeated Lehman, 42-0, but fell to Mechanicsburg, 42-28, despite winning five of the seven matches wrestled in the dual. Going undefeated on the night were Covington’s D.J. Jennings (110 lbs, 1 pin), Ben Miller (116, 1 pin), Cole Smith (122, 1 pin), Dalton Bordelon (142, 1 pin, 1 major) and Justin Daniel (172, 2 pins). Finishing 1-1 for the Buccs were Alex Schilling (104 lbs) and Alex Fries (128 lbs).

On Saturday, the Covington HS varsity team travels to the Versailles Invitational, while the reserve teams heads to the Preble Shawnee Invitational. The Jr. high squad will not compete again until Jan. 9 at the Piqua Invitational.
