Covington kept things rolling at the Northeastern Invitational on Saturday, winning their final four duals to finish with an 8-0 overall record and claim the tournament title. The Buccs defeated West Liberty-Salem, 59-9, Hillsboro, 57-9, Northeastern, 54-18, Mechanicsburg B, 68-12, and Northwestern, 50-15.
Finishing with 8-0 records for Covington were Keringten Martin (145, 3 pins), Josh Sowers (152, 4 pins), Deron White (160, 6 pins, tech. fall), Lance Miller (170, 2 pins, 2 tech. falls) and Gage DeHart (182, 4 pins). Joey Schmelzer (160, 2 pins) finished 3-0 on the day. Deron White also won the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament award.
Dolan Young (113, 4 pins, tech. fall) and Riley Richards (126, 4 pins) each finished 7-1, while Ross Bowman (160, 3 pins) finished 4-1. Austin Flick (138, 2 pins) and Carl Lankford (285, 5 pins) both finished 6-2 overall. Also competing well and winning matches for the Buccs were Kyle Barga (126, 2 pins), Fletcher Metz (132, pin), Parker Dysinger (145), Gavin McReynolds (195, pin) and Bryce Keiser (220, pin).
These additional 8 dual meet victories helped push head coach Tom Barbee and the Covington Buccs into third place overall for most Ohio dual meet wins. He now has 433 career dual wins as the Buccaneers’ head wrestling coach.
In day one, the wrestling team got off to a good start at the 9-team Northeastern Invitational on Friday night. The Buccs went 3-0 along with a bye to put themselves in good position for Saturday’s action. Covington opened with a 64-12 victory over Urbana, followed by a 62-15 win over Springfield Shawnee. They then concluded the evening by defeating Kenton Ridge, 66-11.
Going undefeated on the night for the Buccs with 3-0 records were Riley Richards (126, 2 pins), Keringten Martin (145, pin), Josh Sowers (152, pin), Deron White (160, 2 pins, tech. fall), Lance Miller (170, tech. fall), Bryce Keiser (220, pin) and Carl Lankford (285, 3 pins). Gage DeHart (182, pin) and Gavin McReynolds (195, pin) each went 4-0 on the day.
Finishing 2-1 were Dolan Young (113, pin), Austin Flick (138, pin), Ross Bowman (160, 2 pins). Also picking up victories for the Buccs were Fletcher Metz (132, pin) and Joey Schmelzer (160).
The Buccs compete next on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 pm with the Jr. High in a dual at Versailles.
