TROY – The Covington Buccaneers had a good day at the Troy Invitational as four wrestlers won individual weight classes and another finished runner-up. Overall, the Buccaneers finished third out of 16 teams with 184 team poimts.
The highlight of the day was the accomplishment of senior Michael Hagan, who became the 10th wrestler in Buccaneer history to reach 150 career wins. His 150th career victory came in his opening match as he pinned Jo’I Woodson of Troy in 1:33. Hagan went on to win the 132 pound weight class with a 7-1 victory over Nikolai Kaye of Piqua in the finals. He also recorded a 46 second pin over Seth Lowry of Milton-Union and a 1:11 pin over Kamryn Sutton of Wayne Trace. Hagan advanced to the finals with a hard-fought 7-5 victory over Owen Weaks of Ben Logan.
Hagan’s accomplishment on 150 career wins ads to the Hagan family legacy in the sport of wrestling. His father, Mike Hagan, was a state qualifier in 1986 and his brother, Daniel Jennings, was a state qualifier in 2013 and 2014. Michael is a three-time state qualifier and a state placer. Now, as a senior, Michael is on a mission to become the fourth Covington wrestler in the history of the program to qualify for state four times.
Carson Taylor won the 113 pound weight class by pinning Bradon Lewis of Miami East in 3:23 in the finals. Taylor and Lewis opened the tournament by facing each other and Taylor won a 15-4 major decision victory. He then recorded three straight pins to advance to the finals, first over Kaesen Hughes of Piqua (1:39), then over Chris Hill of Arcanum (1:17) and Colton Trochelman of Troy (1:16).
Jericho Quinter won the 126 pound weight class with an impressive 13-6 victory over returning state qualifier Payton Mayfield of Milton-Union. Quinter advanced to the finals with three pins and a technical fall. He opened with a 1:50 pin of Avery Meade of Greenville and then a 1:12 pin over Hayden Steinke of Troy. Quinter recorded a 20-4 technical fall victory over Kyle Kibler of Ben Logan and pinned Logan Schlieman of Fairborn in 38 seconds.
Caleb Ryman won the 144 pound weight class by defeating Max Kaye of Piqua 9-2. He opened the tournament with a pin over Gary Kilne of Milton-Union in 1:28 and followed with a 15-0 technical-fall victory over Asher Merritt of Troy and a 1:40 pin of Zach Bockey of St. John’s. Ryman advanced to the finals with a 6-1 win over 2022 state qualifier Layton Hughes of Miami East.
Chase Vanderhorst finished runner-up at 138 pounds due to an injury default in the championship match against Edward Kessen of Delphos St. John’s. Vanderhorst pinned his way to the finals in four consecutive matches – defeating Maximus Clapsaddle of Ben Logan (1:02), Gunner Weldy of Miami East (1:27), Damon Wiley of Troy (1:12) and Evan Carpenter of Ben Logan (1:22).
Jack Blumenstock (157), Aveyen Meek (165), Kaden Thompson (165) and Henry Skaggs (120) all went 2-2 on the day, while Eddie Deaton (106), Christian Clark (120), Diego Lopez (150), Mason Epperson (175) and A.J. Reyes (190) all wrestled hard and gained valuable experience against quality wrestlers.
